A Utah police officer who was being attacked on Friday was saved by a passerby with a concealed pistol, officials said.
The unidentified police officer confronted the attacker, identified as Paul Douglas Anderson, after spotting feet dangling from a donation bin in Springville, FOX13 Salt Lake City reported on Saturday. Anderson got out of the bin, but refused to remove his hands from his pocket.
The officer ordered Anderson to remove his hands out of his pockets. Anderson eventually took his hands out of his pants pockets and began repeatedly punching the officer in the face.

I wouldn't count on this "good guy with a gun" aiding a police officer in distress, being reported on any of the mainstream media networks.

“Meyer aimed the pistol at Anderson and yelled at him to stop attacking the officer. Anderson bolted from the scene as responding officers arrived.”
Could’ve been a hairy moment for Mr Meyer.
A. I’m glad the citizen was there and ready to help the officer.
B. The citizen should have kept his name and photo private.
Too many people today will automatically root for the criminal, because “that’s what they see in the movies”.
C. The officer could use more hand to hand combat training, if they still do that. If dealing with someone desperate enough to steal from a bin, maintain some distance between you and him for a while.
“Meyer aimed the pistol at Anderson and yelled at him to stop attacking the officer. Anderson bolted from the scene as responding officers arrived.
And then they shot Mr. Meyer.
The Officer is not identified but is referred to as 'he' and 'him.'
I wonder if 'he' may have actually been a female officer who was overpowered?
Him or her, the officer involved really doesn’t belong on the street without more training.
When pulling a concealed weapon and coming to the rescue of someone, there is always the risk of getting shot by a LEO or another CCW carrier who doesn't recognize you as a "friendly". This is probably doubly true when the person you're trying to help is a cop and his buddies (LEOs) are coming to the rescue.
Could not find “he” or “him” used in the article when referring to “the officer,” which means likely a female cop. Dishonest reporting. There are beat downs of male cops by perps, but one most often reads about such incidents involving females.
Very well done, Mr. Meyers. Should have pulled the trigger a couple of seconds sooner. No one would blame you.
From the Daily Herald-
“The officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of a fractured orbital eye socket and lacerations to his face, according to Waters report.”
He and him used in this article to describe the officer
I saw a you tube video a while ago where two guys were recording an officer being attacked by a man. They were in their car in the parking lot. They were laughing.
Suddenly, a speed walking woman with high heels approaches, removes her heels and starts wailing away at the bad guy’s face and head. She saved that police officer’s life.
Very true. This is generally taught in CCW classes.
