Tax bill means debt limit action needed sooner
Axios ^ | 2/1/18 | Anon

Because the tax bill reduced government revenues, Congress must act to raise the debt limit by early March, instead of as late as April, the Congressional Budget Office said today, according to Bloomberg.

Why it matters: Failing to raise the debt limit — which would prevent the U.S. from continuing to borrow money to pay its bills — is perhaps the most dangerous of the deadlines awaiting Congress early this year. Treasury markets are already "starting to show apprehension," Bloomberg reported. A failure would be chaotic to the world economy, and could mean delays in Social Security benefit or other government payments.

More people working and earning more money means higher tax revenue.

In the long term, perhaps. In the short term federal tax receipts are down and the government will hit the debt ceiling earlier than expected. So it should be an interesting cat fight in the coming weeks.

After 85 years as profligate spendthrifts President Trump turns democrats into budget-hawks in less than one year!

And in the same amount of time, Trump turned the fiscally prudent Republicans into don't-give-a-darn, spend-like-there's-no-tomorrow drunken sailors.

The fact is that the only time the Democrats care about the deficit is when a Republican is in the White House and the Republicans only care about the deficit when a Democrat is in the White House. That isn't going to change.

When the amount of spending is far surpassing the amount being added to the already unsustainable national debt, higher tax revenue is mote.

BS! That is how politicians see it. That is not how economics works and the people who write this stuff mostly know that.

True - More or less.

At the very least he made it safe for them to come out of the closet.

Many (or most) republicans are liberals at heart with regard to spending anyway.

Claims of fiscal conservatism sound good on the campaign trail but results demonstrate that true fiscal conservatives are outnumbered and out maneuvered.

After all, democrats didn't ring up $20.6 trillion dollars in debt on their own.

Delusional govt for delusional people.

Real people cut spending, they do not go deeper into debt!

If they are down, receipts are down from record high revenues.

Exactly. And where exactly have Republicans increased spending like the Democrats? In the 3 week CR???

So...you're saying the debt limit doesn'tneed to be increased? How did you reach that conclusion?

Perhaps. But they are still down.

The truth is that the debt will keep going up until the collapse. It’s inevitable. The people in Congress don’t have the will to do anything other than keep the ball rolling as long as possible and hope they’re retired and gone before that happens.

Mnuchin was on TV yesterday talking about the need to raise the debt ceiling earlier than originally planned. This is straight from the horses mouth.

I’d like to see President Trump issue an Executive Order that — during the Democrat-caused fake budget “emergency” — mandates “DEFERRED ACTION ON NON-ESSENTIAL GRANTS”.

So sorry, NO more College “research” grants...
So sorry, NO more subsidies for PBS, NPR and PP...
So sorry, NO more contributions to the PLO and UN...
So sorry, NO more aid for any claimed “need” of rogue self-identified “Sanctuaries”...
So sorry, NO more subsidies for the National Endowment for the Arts, etc, etc...

Who knows?

Maybe those beneficiaries will receive their “deferred” taxpayer-funded “grants” when the fake “emergency” has past.

Maybe not...

.

Amen. There is nothing more that Republicans love to do, than spend money we don't have, and run the debt up for our grandchildren. When Bush took office, Republicans couldn't wait to chip away at that budget surplus, and they really haven't slowed down since.

Someday, around the time I win the lottery, we'll get a political party that gives a damn about this country's finances.
