Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) ripped House Intelligence Committee chair Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) on Wednesday following charges from committee Democrats that Nunes had presented an altered memo to the White House for review and release.
In a brief statement, Schumer accused Nunes of being intent to undermine the rule of law with his attempt to "interfere with the Russia probe."
"Its clear that Chairman Nunes will seemingly stop at nothing to undermine the rule of law and interfere with the Russia probe. Hes been willing to carry the White Houses water, attack our law enforcement and intelligence officials, and now to mislead his House colleagues," Schumer wrote in a statement.
The Senate's top Democrat went on to call on Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to challenge Nunes and other Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, who on Monday voted to release a memo detailing purported government surveillance abuses.
"If Speaker Ryan cares about the integrity of the House or the rule of law, he will put an end to this charade once and for all," Schumer added.
Schumer's statement follows a letter from the committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), that Nunes had made "substantive" changes to the memo between Monday's vote and his presentation of the document to White House lawyers. The Republican-crafted memo alleges corrosive abuse of United States surveillance powers by the Justice Department.
"While the Majoritys changes do not correct the profound distortions and inaccuracies in your document, they are nonetheless substantive," Schiff wrote in his letter to Nunes earlier Wednesday night.
"It is now imperative that the Committee Majority immediately withdraw the document that it sent to the White House."
The FBI has also denounced the memo, calling the document "misleading" in a rare statement Wednesday afternoon.
"As expressed during our initial review, we have grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memos accuracy," the bureau wrote in a statement.
How ya sleeping these days, Chuckles??
What do democrats care about the rule of law. I suppose in their twisted up heads bringing illegal aliens to the SOTU was perfectly legal. The rule of law is just fine to them as long as they’re not expected to obey it. And which memo is more discredited, the Nunes memo or the Russian dossier that started this phony 3 ring circus?
If he refused to read the memo how would he know if it has been altered.
How does Schiff purport to know what the Trump Admin has at the White House?
They don’t care about the rule of law and unfortunately for them the military does. They are going to pay dearly because Marines don’t play games.
Cry Baby LIAR Schumer is going to need DEPENDS soon!
Desperation turns to lunacy. The ‘Rats and the FBI get two changes THEY wanted, but now they’re screaming they didn’t get a revote after they got their way!?
#ReleaseBothMemos
Was this the plan all along? Need a stall? Demand a couple of easily granted piddly changes. When granted, do NOT insist on a revote. When the memo is about to go public, THEN insist on a revote.
What’s with this “altered memo” stuff? Release as-is. Looks REALLY bad having rumors of changes done at the WH.
Well, maybe.
Civil war happens if and when the military chain of command becomes divided.
I don't care how many AR-15s there are in your gun safe, if you have to fight the USMC you don't have a civil war, you have a rebellion and a slaughterhouse.
I have said all along that a US political crisis could only lead to civil war if both political sides had a plausible claim to authority over the armed forces, or if the officers in charge of combat commands were divided into factions and some stopped taking orders from SECDEF.
Both of those things are now possible, but not yet at >10% probability.
Let's say, for example, that Trump were impeached by the House and removed by the Senate over transparently bogus charges. Let's say Ryan (Romney) and McConnell (Bush) conspired with Mueller to pull this off in a 48-hour period.
Trump would be out (legally) but not justly.
Then imagine Mattis announced he would not accept the result, but the CNO announced that the Navy would not take orders from (former) SECDEF Mattis. THEN you could have a war.
Or, new scenario, suppose all this sh*t is being coordinated from Obama's command post by Valerie Jarrett and Jeh Johnson. Suppose further that they have suborned the loyalty of a group of anti-Russia generals, who are working to protect Mueller and the FBI group behind the scenes.
As soon as the arrest warrants go out, tanks appear on the streets in DC, Trump and Pence vanish, and the internet goes down.
THEN, you could have a war, especially if Trump resurfaces at Mount Weather or on a warship and orders the disloyal generals arrested.
When you are drawing flak, the time for politics and law enforcement is over.
The more they fight it, the more I hope it buries them.
If we are going to war in the next 72 hours over this, “undermining the rule of law” will be how it starts.
There will be elements within the military who will act to “uphold the rule of law”.
Mattis, McMaster, and Kelly may not be on the same page here.
Schumer? What House Representative district is he from?
One thing one can reliably say about Schumer is that he always finds a way to jump straight to hyperbole on any matter.

RELEASE THE ****** MEMO AS WRITTEN! TELL MCMASTER TO SIT DOWN AND STFU! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN THE WHITE HOUSE?
>>and to civil war? they are not going to peacefully into the night
We dont pacify them through capitulation. We dont calm them down by giving in. Either we win or they win. That is the future of America. Coexistence is not possible because compromise is where we give them everything they want and they say that it was not enough, but we can always revisit the issue later for further reform.
My fear is that the Deep State will assassinate Trump. I dont know if Pence has to resolve to lead us to do what must be done after that.
But Di-Fi (Feinstein) leaking classified info is no problem.
Why was it not released before the other side had the chance to do exactly what we knew they were going to do, which is exactly what they are doing? It’s just like how we had to sit back and know Obama admin was doing corrupt things yet the dummy Joe public voted him back in 4 more years, it’s also like all the refugees coming to Europe, we saw the pics and read the stories and we all knew what would happen yet the powers that be had not the common sense of the average IQ human being to foretell that?! I’m getting carried away sorry, time to go to bed rather than read any more memo talk :)
