India's preference for sons over daughters has led to the birth of millions of "unwanted" girls, according to a new report by the Indian government.
Couples' tendency to keep trying until a boy is born has led to the birth of as many as 21 million girls who are "notionally... unwanted," the Economic Survey 2017-18 states.

One has to wonder why this has been the case in so many societies for so long. I’d hazard a guess but it would be hazardous. Mad Maxine comes to mind...
A good thing, that these girl babies are being born at all.
Most of them are likely aborted. The ultimate inequality.

I’ve been in India a couple of times and continue to connect with some of the people I’ve met. Girls are not wanted because their parents are expected to pay exorbitant dowry and wedding expenses, way out of proportion to the family’s income. The result is that the parents end up working their entire lives just to deal with the cost of marrying off their daughter. The government has tried to make dowry’s illegal, but tradition prevails.
While American feminist demand abortions, Indian women are begging for an end to dowries that result in female feticide.
This article is saying that India doesn’t have enough girls either. The title confused me too. But it implies that the “unwanted girls” in India are aborted or killed as infants.
Islam has led to millions of ‘unwanted’ males - no one to marry.
But who is needed to birth the sons though? Last time I checked, men can’t give birth, except for Arnold in that movie.
China has an overabundance of boys. Sounds like these two nations need to do an exchange program.
I was surprised to see a chart in the article that shows the US has a 4% higher percentage of women over men than is normally expected. That is a bigger difference than would be expected by chance. Usually the number of males births exceeds females. What would account for this?
That is most likely due to more men dying earlier due to poor choices, men die earlier of natural causes and crime.
It has led to about 5% more men than women in India, such that there are tens of million of girls that were aborted or allowed to die because they weren’t wanted.
Historically speaking, more females died off due to childbirth and a host of other medical problems.
Advancements in medical science has greatly eliminated these issues while the things that killed off males are largely self inflicted and still affects them.
