... can the CG legally open fire?
Can’t speak for the legality, but I’ve seen CG boats come back on the Great Lakes with dozens of bullet holes in them. I remember speaking to a coasty about 20 years ago while we were delivering parts to them, and I commented on the holes he was fixing. He replied, Yeah, that’s a lot of holes, but you should have seen the other guy.”

Meth ?

I’m thinking Meth is a big export from California. Ever been to Perris or Norco ?

Is there someplace I can sign up to help “discourage” this behavior?

(hint: I already signed up once during Nam)

I like the A-10 idea. They don’t miss.

I hope that the Coast Guard and FBI/DHS are checking any registration numbers on these boats, including who made the engines, control systems, etc. to track down where they were sold, who sold them, and to whom?

Maybe the govt should order the manufacturers to put hidden transponders in them for tracking if they approach US/Canadian or even Mexican coastal waters.

I suspect that the captured crews are talking unless the cartels are holding their families hostage. In that case, these guys are going to get 10-20 years or more for their smuggling. They have a lot of incentive to talk if they can.

"Time to start thinning the cartel herd."

The cartels, through their "legitimate" front companies are major political campaign contributors.
