gCaptain ^ | January 29, 2018 | John Konrad

Since the tragic death of U. S. Coast Guard Boatswain’s Mate Chief Petty Officer Terrell five years ago the efforts of cartels to smuggle drugs with the use of small high-speed panga boats has only intensified… and now the cartels have a new weapon they are using to invade America’s Pacific Coast.

If there are a few surplus A-10 Thunderbolts from the Mid East conflict I have a suggestion for a new tactical mission.

Time to start thinning the cartel herd.

If the theoretical wall was ever built, there would be a lot more of these boats going nonstop. As basic conservative economics tells us, as long as a country is initializing illegal immigration, people will find a way to get from point A to point B.

We easily and readily have the technology, put teeth into a defined ROE and let the Coast Guard handle it. Screw the DEA, the Coasties would love it!

Build Coast Guard drone interception boats. Double duty as a torpedo.

That panga boat must be capable of 70 mph or more. How did these slow CG boats capture it? When they refuse to stop and try to outrun the CG, can the CG legally open fire?

I'm surprised the cartels are using old school outboard engines. They have the money to build 15,000 hp gas turbine powered boats.

Also could use some night vision and Mini-guns on the ground. Coastal defense....

Basic common sense economics tells us that you couldn’t stuff enough illegal aliens in one of those boats to equal a $78 million dollar load of cocaine.

Drugs smuggling probably pays 1 million times people smuggling on a dollar per pound basis. I don’t thing drug smugglers would waste time with people.

The cartels are no longer smuggling marijuana into California where it is now legal. They are smuggling cocaine and meth and these are very bad players who I hope don’t come across a recreational boater or commercial fishing boat. Thanks open border folks.

Craft that fail to heave to, when requested in customs waters, may be subject to disabling fire. The challenge is detection assets and sufficient interceptor assets.

I expect they’ll just blow by other boats on the ocean. It’s the people who may be enjoying the ocean and shore in remote coves that are at real risk of being killed when they come ashore. They’ve found these abandoned panga boats on shore for years now.

The CG needs E-3 AWACS with look-down radar patrolling the ocean 24x7:

“The E3 look-down radar has a 360° view of the horizon, and at operating altitudes has a range of more than 320km. The radar can detect and track air and sea targets simultaneously.”

... can the CG legally open fire?

No, feeding cocaine to fish is illegal.
