Samsung Explains Why It Cannot Build Factory in Nigeria

January 18, 2018 | by ndubuisi ekekwe

The head of Samsung Electronics Africa, Sung Yoon, has explained why Samsung cannot manufacture its products in Nigeria. Of course, there is nothing new in the exposition except that Samsung has elevated the pulpit where it came from. Samsung may be in a fierce competition with Tecno, but the truth remains that even if it is #1 in Nigeria, in the smartphone business, the company would not build any plant in our nation. For all I know, Samsung is not a charity, and smartphones made in Nigeria would be more expensive than those imported from Korea.

To make a smartphone, you need about 350-450 components; none is made in Nigeria. Why import 350 different supplies into a country when you can bring in one product?

Probably the same reason Apple isn’t building in Detroit. Lack of infrastructure, right?

But aren’t there wealthy Nigerians who will invest? I get emails from Nigeria all the time, in which they offer to share millions of dollars with me. Certainly these Nigerians would welcome investment and out their money there.

Doesn’t Toyota and VW build in Nigeria? If not why not? If we are to become one world should we not all have foreign investments in our countries? Hmmmmmm Haiti comes to mind, but that should be cleared up with Conan shortly, no?

"Probably the same reason Apple isn’t building in Detroit. Lack of infrastructure, right?"

Report: Nearly Half Of Detroiters Can’t Read

"DETROIT (WWJ) – According to a new report, 47 percent of Detroiters are “functionally illiterate.” The alarming new statistics were released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund on Wednesday."

This in a modern country where you are required by law to attend school until you are at least 16 years old.

I guess considering that 40% of the kids in Detroit never graduate from high school, that comes as no surprise.
