The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended Russia from the Winter Olympics in the South Korean city of Pyeongchang. On December 17, the IOC prohibited the use of Russian national symbols at the Games. On January 16, 2018, it was reported that a special commission of the International Olympic Committee was going to consider a possibility to let Russian athletes use the flag of the Soviet Union during the Games in Pyeongchang.
"These are proposals from certain officials, members of public chambers," Leonid Tyagachev, honorary president of the Russian Olympic Committee, told Pravda.Ru. "We have the final decision of the IOC, and Russian athletes will perform under the flag of the IOC, rather than the neutral flag, as journalists mistakenly suppose," said the expert.
It is worthy of note that the idea to send Russian athletes to South Korea to perform at the 2018 Winter Games under the flag of the Soviet Union was originally proposed by director of the Great Moscow Circus, Edgard Zapashny, who posted such a message on his social media page.
"Let's write: "USSR." After all, there is no such country, so it's just symbolism. Russia is the successor to the Soviet Union, and most importantly, it was only the USSR that they [the West] feared more than they now fear Russia. Let out guys and girls wear the "USSR" proudly and show everyone what they can do," said Zapashny.
Commentator Dmitry Guberniev told Pravda.Ru that such an idea was nonsensical.
"There is no such country as the USSR, how can they consider using the Soviet flag? Can they consider the flag of the tsarist Russia too? This is impossible even from the economic point view - who is going to make all the costumes?"

“Symbolism” indeed.
Very ugly symbolism.
Id laugh my ass off if one or more of the participating Russian athletes marched under the Hillary campaign flag.
The Olympics have devolved into something that’s no better than the NFL! You won’t find me spending a minute watching, and I love skiing.
Of course, any Communists are always welcome at the Olympics and UN, AND they are always exempt from the rules.
I don’t know. Can athletes from Zimbabwe perform under the flag of Rhodesia? Can Thai athletes perform un the flag of Siam? Can Iranian athletes perform under the Persian flag?
How far back do we want to go?
The most amusing part of this story is that Pravda created a news article out of two guys arguing about whether Russian athletes should march under the Soviet flag. This is something you’d typically see on some fringe internet message board. One poster says do it. Then gets attacked by several other posters. Yet here it is as a news article in Pravda.
I don’t personally like to see nations banned, but this was bought and paid for by Russia’s own actions.
If you don’t like being banned, don’t screw up.
Follow the rules.
Any athlete or athletic program that is breaking the rules should be punished.
Some say the U. S. is guilty of violations. Hey, if it can be proven, then let the lumps fall where they will.
I doubt if Dixie can scrounge together a Winter Olympic team, but it’d be a hoot to watch.
I suppose certain US athletes could wear the confederate battle flag then?
Sure, why not! Its the only way to have a truly inclusive Olympics...

So what’s next? The Southern States athletes competing under the “Stars and Bars?”
Gadsden flag?
They could march under the pre Bolshevik Russian tsarist flag.

So some circus clown’s Facebook posts are consider news now.
I thought that WAS the Soviet flag.
Even if some of our athletes are, its not to the level of intricate STATE involvement, sponsorship, and cover-up as is true in Russia.
I would like to believe your right.
I don’t really know.
Meaning doping is on an individual basis and determined between players and their coaches. Not a systematic, state-sponsored effort of the US government.
I recommend the documentary on Netflix: Icarus.
Thank you GSR.
I’m not an expert on this topic. I’ve seen it said several times, so I’m only addressing the issue of it having been raised.
I applaud you providing information to the contrary.
