Immigrant rights leader Ravi Ragbir was detained at a routine check-in meeting with ICE officials in Manhattan Thursday, flipping a peaceful vigil outside the Federal Building into a massive protest rally with arrests of at least two city council members. ---SNIP--- Ragbir has lived with the threat of deportation for nearly a decade due to a 16-year old conviction for wire fraud, his supporters said.

He was placed into removal proceedings in 2006 and spent 22 months in immigration detention before being released in February 2008, they said.

When we read deportation sob stories they never mention if the illegal committed other felonies. Ragbir was convicted in 2001 for processing fraudulent loan applications/mortgages (wire fraud). Despite that he has been running the New York City Sanctuary Coalition for years. The spin that is going to start coming from the media is that illegals are being deported after routine "check-ins" with ICE officials.
