Walmart is abruptly closing several Sam's Club stores and laying off thousands [100+ stores?]

Walmart is suddenly closing several Sam's Club stores across the US.

Closures were reported by local media in Texas, New York, New Jersey, Indiana, Arizona, Alaska, and elsewhere.

In some cases, employees were not informed of the closures prior to showing up to work on Thursday.

Instead, they learned that their store would be closing when they found the store's doors locked and a notice announcing the closure, according to reports.

Walmart and Sam's Club did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sam's Club offered an explanation on Twitter, however, saying, "After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we’ve decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy. Closing clubs is never easy and we’re committed to working with impacted members and associates through this transition."

That is really traumatic for many people. Not a decent thing to do.

This just after WalMart announced they are increasing minimum wages (including Sams) to $11.00?

Well, that was abrupt.

Not to worry, Costco and BJ’s are still in business.

Right. This morning’s press release about the increase in wages for employees didn’t mention that several thousand more were losing their jobs. That’s crappy.

Maybe thats’s what enabled the pay raises touted in earlier headlines today.

Leaving a big store open (x100) costs a LOT of money if they’re losing money. Doesn’t help when everyone working there is depressed & desperate upon hearing the news before it closes; also compels them to work when they’d really rather be looking for work. Shut the doors, give ‘em 2-4 weeks pay, don’t make ‘em slog thru the tragedy of closing.

Funny thing is, there are laws that say you have to tell employees within a certain timeframe that their job is going away.
Don’t know off the top of my head if it is national or just here where I am, but there might be some issue there..

If your "associates" find out they've lost their jobs only when they show up for work and the store is closed then it doesn't sound like you're all that eager to work with them.

I recall the Ground Round restaurants were closed suddenly while people were eating.

In some cases, employees were not informed of the closures prior to showing up to work on Thursday.

Wonder what "in some cases" actually stand for as far as how they did it.

Shame if they opted to not notify but "some" may have been unreachable for various reasons.

Years ago, the wife was a waitress and showed up for work one Monday morning to find the place closed and stripped....

Good News/Bad News.

Good news is you’re getting a raise! Bad news is - we’re closing you’re store. You’re fired.

I’m betting you’ll see all that stuff available thru Walmart.com with free shipping to the nearest store. Sam’s Club is redundant nowadays and membership stores have always been stupid anyway.
