Exclusive: Bannon apologizes (2018)
Axios ^ | Jan 7, 2018 | Mike Allen

Posted on 01/07/2018 9:02:05 AM PST by Eddie01

Battered by the backlash from Michael Wolff's book, Steve Bannon is trying to make amends with the Trump family, providing a statement to Axios that expresses "regret" to President Trump and praises his son, Donald Trump Jr.

"Donald Trump, Jr. is both a patriot and a good man. He has been relentless in his advocacy for his father and the agenda that has helped turn our country around."

"My support is also unwavering for the president and his agenda — as I have shown daily in my national radio broadcasts, on the pages of Breitbart News and in speeches and appearances from Tokyo and Hong Kong to Arizona and Alabama."

"President Trump was the only candidate that could have taken on and defeated the Clinton apparatus. I am the only person to date to conduct a global effort to preach the message of Trump and Trumpism; and remain ready to stand in the breech for this president's efforts to make America great again."

"My comments about the meeting with Russian nationals came from my life experiences as a Naval officer stationed aboard a destroyer whose main mission was to hunt Soviet submarines to my time at the Pentagon during the Reagan years when our focus was the defeat of 'the evil empire' and to making films about Reagan's war against the Soviets and Hillary Clinton's involvement in selling uranium to them."

"My comments were aimed at Paul Manafort, a seasoned campaign professional with experience and knowledge of how the Russians operate. He should have known they are duplicitous, cunning and not our friends. To reiterate, those comments were not aimed at Don Jr."

"Everything I have to say about the ridiculous nature of the Russian 'collusion' investigation I said on my 60 Minutes interview. There was no collusion and the investigation is a witch hunt."

"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency." The backstory ... In Wolff's book, Bannon is quoted as saying of Mueller's prosecutors: "They’re going to crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV.'"

Be smart: While Bannon's statement may seem like a baby step, he's as stubborn as Trump when it comes to apologizing and admitting he has made a mistake. He views any concession as a sign of humiliating weakness.

What's next: Look for Don Jr. to accept the statement graciously. But Bannon has further to go with President Trump: Axios has learned that POTUS has said that he wants surrogates who appear for him on TV to "bury Steve."

Axios' Jonathan Swan reported last night: Trump has been working the phones over the past several days, telling allies they need to choose between him and Bannon. P.S. "Fake book" ... Trump tweets as he leaves Camp David: "I’ve had to put up with the Fake News from the first day I announced that I would be running for President. Now I have to put up with a Fake Book, written by a totally discredited author."

"Ronald Reagan had the same problem and handled it well. So will I!"

First resign from brietbarf. You’ve poisoned the brand. Then crawl on your belly for forgiveness and serve this administration (from outside of it) as a gopher.

Bannon is a pretty smart guy, but he is a completely out of control attention whore. He has no ability to control his own impulse to make himself feel important by the act of drawing attention to himself. This is simply today’s version of the same story. Ben Shapiro had an excellent take on Steve Bannon. Ben worked with Steve Bannon for many years at Breitbart and I believe accurately encapsulates what and who Steve Bannon is. He exists for the sole purpose of trying to derive the spotlight from being next to people who have gotten things done and achieved success. He himself has done that once and has no ability to do that any further.

DING...DING...DING....yep...I believe he’s got some problems bigger than politics...but, he sure screwed the pooch. Some brilliant people have REALLY big problems, that ultimately become their undoing....he seems to be one of those.

All that accomplishes is to make him look mentally unstable.

He called Jr. a weak traitor and Trump a liar when he said he didn’t meet with the Rusky too. You don’t/can’t walk that back. Maybe he should go to and blame it on drugs.

Yeah, I’m with you - that ‘working the phones’ bit sounded like a lie to me too.

Axios has learned that POTUS has said that he wants surrogates who appear for him on TV to “bury Steve.”

Axios’ Jonathan Swan reported last night: Trump has been working the phones over the past several days, telling allies they need to choose between him and Bannon.

None of this rings true.

The whole sordid mess should never have happened in the first place and apologies are way too little too late. What is tells me is that there was a sliver of truth in what Wolf reported Bannon said about the Trumps. Get this dichotomy with Bannon. He justifies his criticism of Don, Jr. on his past military service which taught him not to trust Russians, but he has no problem in blabbering personal vitriol to a sleaze ball Hollywood reporter. Somethings wrong with this picture.

the trouble I have with Bannon is that he said these things while working in the White House. It’s not like he got fired, got mad and said them. He showed extremely poor judgment in talking to Wolf in the first place. If he had any sense at all he would have realized that Wolf was going to write an anti-Trump book.

His brother Race would have handled it better, but he always has his hands full with those two brats, running off into danger all the time.

Not so..IMO

Trump knows he need to be seen as a man that can accept an apology and move on.

There will be a lot of people very soon who will want or need to apologize and he will want them to know they can.

Better an enemy who has apologized than a cornered enemy.

Could be the media did it to themselves, and grabbed words out of context and lied until they made fools of themselves. Could be they took the bait deliberately laid for them. Or it could be that Steve is just a dumb-ass who doesn’t know how to stay focused and on message.

At any rate, some of the allegations of this book are such utter nonsense that it’s amazing anyone believed it. If Trump didn’t want to win, he sure did a piss poor job of losing.

The worst part may turn out to be the lack of Cantorizing of weasels and draining of swamp as a result.
The only winners here are the Bush League Republicans like McConnell, Graham, Rubio, McCain, Alexander, Flake, Corker, Murkowsky, Hoeven, Hatch, Heller and Ryan who desperately want the final amnesty that will cement in place the demographic changes they have made to the country against the will of the citizens.

Total speculation based on experience:
Steve has a drinking problem and got loose tongued with a gossip writer when imbibing and is not sure what he said.
