“Time’s Up” for Our Nation’s Children, Too

The Red Carpet at this Sunday’s Golden Globes will be a little more monochromatic than in years past. Many Hollywood actresses will don black to send a message of solidarity with victims of sexual harassment.

The #MeToo movement of last October has generated a new initiative, Time’s Up, which will include a legal defense fund and advocate for legislation combatting workplace harassment. The message the women of Hollywood and Time’s Up wish to send: Time’s up for those who engage in sexual misconduct.

But is it?

Until our society recognizes and decries the harms of Internet pornography and the hypersexualization of young women by mainstream corporations and Hollywood for profit, very little will change. The sexual predator in your neighborhood or workplace whose porn addiction fuels his mentality of sexual entitlement likely does not care what color gown Hollywood actresses wear to the Golden Globes.

But it’s true, in a way. Time is up. The sobering reality is that time’s up for our children, who are becoming addicted to smartphones – with virtually infinite access to pornography and sexualized images of women constantly at their fingertips – at younger ages than ever. Many kids today get a smartphone by the ripe old age of 10.

According to one study, mobile Internet/accessing websites accounts for 53% of activity on smartphones by kids ages 6-12. While they surf the web, it is not a matter of if but when they will encounter sexually exploitive images. Young children are now exposed to hardcore (i.e. mainstream) pornography at an alarming rate, with 27% of older millennials (age 25-30) reporting that they first viewed pornography before puberty. It’s easy to imagine how much worse that problem will get as younger and younger children gain access to their own smartphones before the judgment centers of their brain are even close to fully developed.

For far too many children, time is up for their childhood innocence and their freedom from exposure to sexually exploitive images. Our culture is such that organizations like the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, Protect Young Minds, and Educate and Empower Kids advise parents to start educating their children in an age appropriate way at a young age to develop internal filters against the harmful materials they will inevitably encounter if they have access to the Internet. For concerned parents, there are also services like those offered by Covenant Eyes to apply protective filters to the Internet at home.

As we do this work of protecting children, consider how many actors and actresses, producers, and power players in Hollywood have contributed to our hypersexualized, pornified culture and profited from it. It’s unclear that they were concerned about how these graphic productions would affect the culture in which we raise the next generation of Americans when they decided to make them. Many of these same individuals are now protesting against the inevitable consequences of the sexually exploitive culture their shows and films have fostered. Case in point, Netflix’s forthcoming show “Baby,” which will glamorize the sex trafficking of teenage girls and normalize it as “prostitution.”

Harvey Weinstein blames the 60s and 70s culture in which he was raised and groomed for his sexual misconduct, and he didn’t have a smartphone as a young child. No cultural influence can deprive a person of his free will, but it can impact his mentality, his behavior, and his brain. What can we expect of boys and girls in America who have been fed a steady diet of sexual objectification and exploitation of people’s bodies, especially women’s bodies, online and in mainstream entertainment?

Do the women of Hollywood really expect their black dress statement on the Red Carpet to adequately address a culture that grooms hypersexualized young boys and girls if the deeper cultural issues are not addressed?

I have an 11 year old Granddaughter. I can't imagine the pressure that is going to be put on her in the next few years thanks to a warped view of love, romance and sex brought about by virtually unlimited access for children to hard core pornography. Just as Bill Clinton started his own sexual revolution by claiming that oral sex wasn't really sex, the Internet has made behaviors that were once considered to be deviant the norm, and normal behaviors become old fashioned and uncool. I feel so sorry for her and her generation.

....” behaviors that were once considered to be deviant”....

There is no such thing as ‘deviant’ to young people today, it’s all about ‘experiencing’ regardless of risk...and that is what they are teaching in our schools and universities.

The BIG REVEAL during the Golden Globes will be the roll out of Harvey Weinstein with a seemingly sincere apology speech. He'll swear he's fully recovered and the actresses in the audience wearing their black gowns will completely strip nude, resuming their quest for the best movie roles.

Mark it!

"...it is not a matter of if but when they will encounter sexually exploitative images."

Every other ad seems to be about sexuality; over weight women acting suggestively, mattress ads with sexual persuasion....some radio ads are just as sensual.

What all ages see on T.V. ads etc. use to be found in the "dime" novel or at the circus side shows.

Nothing shouts "I Care" more than a chance to dazzle the paparazzi as you walk the Red Carpet in an eye-catching new ensemble styled in black.

I believe that my generation will say to liberals, “Sit down and shut the F up.” What I mean is that we want to know the real history of America (not the PC crap), math that is true (not 1+1=3), Earth history (not what man is doing to it). Yes, my generation is libertarian on gays, but we don’t want liberals to control the government.

“Libertarian on gays”-—LOL. What irrational Orwellian speak.

I believe in Free Will as all true Christians do, since Free Will and Individualism are Christian concepts which grew out of Thomism and subsidiarity and is embedded into our Constitution and “Justice” System. It is why only Christian cultures had/have the most free and just systems of government in the history of mankind.

Sodomy is always a vice: it is a dysfunctional, learned nihilistic, irrational behavior like the muslims teach to their little harem boys, which is always perverted and evil. Our Justice System is based on Natural Rights from God only (God’s Laws, not Satan’s Laws). Our “justice” system comes from Lockean Philosophy and Natural Law Theory, and the Rule of Law is “Right Reason according to Natural Law”. Promotion of sodomy in any culture throws out natural laws, God’s Laws, and Reason. You can’t have Rule of Law without God’s Laws (Higher Laws) which is the foundation of our legal system and Western Civilization-—Reason and Higher Laws—not irrational, vile man-made up “law” which is “null and void”. Irrational religions (ones not Christian) were ejected by our “Justice” System.

Vice creates Slaves. Sodomites are slaves, as are hedonists who live for instant gratification which destroys all human relationships, etc. People who can’t control their base animal instincts have no virtue which is essential for freedom. People who can’t control their base instincts are less than human (dehumanized—irrational animals). As everyone who has studied theology and Natural Law understands, vice will collapse culture. It will destroy liberty (freedom) because vice destroys everything that is good and all human flourishing relationships. You are NOT free when you are controlled by the emotions—”pleasures”—outside forces like lust (seven deadly sins) which will make addicts (slaves) out of everyone who habituates vice (evil, irrational, behaviors).

Vice (no inner virtue) creates a need for outer (state) controls-—like prisons, courts, police, military, etc. Once vice becomes the norm—it collapses the civil society where private property can’t be protected and no trust among the people destroys the community.

Vice will always collapse free cultures and it is why Montesquieu stated that a Just Law has to promote “public virtue”. So-called “Libertarians” of today forget or DENY that Virtue is essential for Freedom. They “think” that you can have evil people doing evil things and it will create a “civil” society. WRONG. Socrates knew over 2400 years ago that it is absolutely impossible since Virtue is essential for freedom.
