On Friday, two GOP Senators asked the DOJ to open a criminal investigation into the author of the Russian dossier, former British spy, Christopher Steele.

Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) sent a letter to Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher Wray Friday demanding they investigate if Christopher Steele lied to federal authorities.

The letter is the first criminal referral from Congress; the DOJ, however, isn’t required to open an investigation in response.

It is now being reported by Paul Sperry of The New York post that the Senate Judiciary Committee has discovered “credible evidence of a CRIME” committed by Christopher Steele in his dealings with the FBI.

Another investigation. Ten years from now they’ll wrap up with a report.

Steele is very quickly going to run out of money defending himself. The specter of doing time might flip this guy. Of course Steele is a prime candidate for an Arkancide.

Ha! It'll probably be on a memorandum summary, perhaps stating We are expressing to Justice our view that no charges are appropriate in this case.

Feeding the FBI fake info in an attempt to get the agency to do something the feeder wants is indeed a crime. In addition, the FBI even paid for the fake info. Lots of crimes here.

Steele isn’t a US citizen. It is doubtful that we would ask the Brits to extradite him.

That guy writing over at Conservative Treehouse has a different take. He thinks this is a ploy to get the bad actors at the FBI and DOJ in trouble. They say that Steele must have lied to Congress because his testimony contradicts that Obama era officials. Well... who’s lying? Mr. Steele’s or the Obama cronies? Hmm???

Requesting that Steele be investigated gives Trump’s DOJ an excuse to sic another prosecutor on everyone involved.

Steele has never testified to Congress. He apparently had extensive contact with the FBI.

Congress presumably has testimony and perhaps documentary evidence from the FBI about what Steele told them.

Steele’s a patsy. Get those in the FBI, DOJ who enabled him, then focus on Clinton, Clapper and Comey.

Trump was not told Steele was investigating him. He has to be told or no go.

Specifically, what crime do they think was committed? I'm not sure that creating a 'dossier' full of lies an innuendo actually breaks any laws, except possibly those regarding slander. Such laws are generally prosecuted as civil torts, not criminal statutes. Who knows though. There are certainly enough laws out there that if the government wants to charge him with something I'm sure they can come up with something.
