This proposal is a total defeat of what was promised. It is an absurd nonstarter. Trump better not fall for this or he is politically finished with 63 million voters. That is not what you said, mr. President. Dont destroy the base!! It is up to you to kill thid cold dead!! 100% of the wall or zero daca!!

“This is beyond discouraging!!”

I’d like to see a race by several contractors to build the wall, like when they built the trans continental railroad.

I guess that the problem is getting the money. Congress has a rolling ten year budget window, and it is just hard to work a big load of cash in there, as there are so many competing requirements. Anytime you add anything, you have to also add additional money for operations, maintenance, personnel and so on for every out year - for ever.

This request is a big increase. More could be added later, but maybe this all Trump’s chips can buy right now - a decent start.

There has been mention of $1.6 Billion per year for quite a long time - there must be some basis for that number. It could be what Customs and Border Protection had on their wish list, as a result of their long term planning. It might be all they think they could manage to execute per year, or might be what they consider all they really need to achieve good outcomes.

Or it could simply be a budget wedge (placeholder) that budgeteers in Congress have been using behind the scenes for a long time, based on what they thought they could afford to spend.

I guess that the bottom line is that the wall seems likely to start getting better during Trump’s first term, but will be far from finished at this proposed rate. Maybe he can trade up for more money later, as they ramp up.

Drones with night vision and IR to pick out body heat or car engines can cover a lot of territory in rural deserts or mountains or big lakes or rivers. They would make interdiction much more likely in those areas, almost as soon as they start being used - long before a wall could be completed.

On the other hand, walls would have to be heavily manned/patrolled, or simple ladders could be used. The Border Patrol is already concerned about its ability to recruit and train just the 5,000 new officers in this (big) budget increase request, much less the huge numbers required to visually guard the length of a border wall 24x7. Some things just take longer than others.

They have to balance the value of every element. Do you want immigrants down next month, or are you willing to wait a few years for a wall first? Just a wall without people or technology is easy to defeat(ladder). Just a wall and people without technology, would require huge numbers, in many shifts to cover it 24x7. You can’t ignore any element, without hurting the overall mission

“can this report be true?”

It is just a proposal, heading into negotiations. This proposal does seem detailed, and is consistent with other indicators that have been seen over the months. It would be a fat addition to the budget for border security, if approved.

Democrats might not agree to anything in an election year though, preferring to have the issue heading into the election. We’ll have to see what, if anything, Trump can get to get started. Art of the Deal.

He did end Obama’s DACA policy when the time approached for budget negotiations, so he had those chips to bargain with.

Washington Times reports:

“the department reiterated that Mr. Trump’s October list of priorities must be part of the discussion. That list included the crackdown on sanctuary cities, new authority to reject bogus asylum applications and to quickly kick out new illegal immigrants, and a change in the current patterns of family-based chain migration.”

So it is a full spectrum approach to controlling immigration.

I agree completely.

I have supported Trump since before he became a candidate, but he needs to get started on this.

NOW.

Recent reports are that illegal border crossings have already dropped by half since Trump’s election. Also, is Mexico going to pay for any of this???

It would be cheaper to knock over North Korea overnight and then dismantle the DMZ barriers and ship it to the US border i offhanded was thinking.

Bring back some mines as well.

We do not have 10 years. What is the problems with these dimwits in DC with this cost.

We the People demand that they secure the border now. If not with the fence, with the military.

10 years my foot!!

Agree...It will never happen. Why is President Trump trying to pull a butt load of wool over our eyes. We have all been through this charade before and most of us will not bite on this one.

If those (and I am now including the President) in DC wanted to secure the border right NOW they would put the military on the border and put ROEs in to shoot to kill any traffic coming across our border. End of story, border is now secure.

Not look out stations and then go try to round them up once they have crossed, put them in holding areas and then give them a hearing in front of a US Judge who gives them a date to come back. Of course they skip and now are running free in the US. Utter BS

President Trump screwed up by not placing active duty troops along the entire length of the border in January.

Pull our military out of Germany, Korea, etc. and re-deploy them along our southern border.
