Trump, Citing Pakistan as a ‘Safe Haven’ for Terrorists, Freezes Aid
The New York Slimes ^ | JAN. 4, 2018 | MARK LANDLER and GARDINER HARRIS

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration announced on Thursday that it would suspend nearly all security aid to Pakistan, an across-the-board freeze that is the most tangible sign yet of Washington’s frustration with the country’s refusal to crack down on terrorist networks operating there.

The decision, which could affect as much as $1.3 billion in annual aid, came three days after President Trump complained on Twitter that Pakistan had “given us nothing but lies & deceit” and accused it of providing “safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan.”

The move underlines how swiftly relations with Pakistan have deteriorated since Mr. Trump took office. But it echoes several previous rifts between the countries over Pakistan’s role as a sanctuary for extremist groups — a role that has poisoned Islamabad’s relations with Washington since the terrorist attacks of September 2001.

Administration officials emphasized that the freeze was temporary and could be lifted if Pakistan changed its behavior. The United States is urging the Pakistani government to cut off contact with militants and reassign intelligence agents with links to extremists, among other measures

Yeah, we have important bases there...but the most dangerous places my son was stationed was close to the Pakistan border. God bless Trump; he’s making the tough choices like Reagdid...not adhering to principles.

You’ve got to run supplies to your army(/Air Force/marines). What path do your logistics take, using what transportation modes? This is military operations 101.

Maybe Pakistan has been allowing the al Queda “guests” that have been living in Iran, to flee to Pakistan, because of the unrest in Iran.

Transport aircraft cannot carry as much as a train or convoy of trucks can; transport aircraft must also fly in friendly or at least neutral skies - if you have to route them around, since you have a fixed number of aircraft, this is less supplies they can deliver per house.

“Relations have deteriorated”?

Relations were great when Obama was in office.

This is what happens when the Taliban are no longer inside the building.

US military has been forced to go the long route around Pakistan

What in tarnation is the long way around that you speak of?

The only country we have any dealings with on their borders is Turkmenistan and I do not see us trucking stuff through there.

Everything will have to flown in now if they really want it. Or they will pay certain trucking companies an exorbitant amount to cover all the bribes they will need to pay to get the stuff to Khost.

>> airlifts

Or something more exospheric given the Pakis have an air force.

Surrounding countries: Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Good question, FreedomPoster (paraphrasing): “So what are the routes with a hyper-agitated Pakistan?”

Straight through Iran?

I’m also curious about that “long land route.” I can’t imagine what it would be.

Interesting.
To balance out, we should reach out to India.

I mean if you are going to make an islamic nuclear power that supports terrorism mad, why go half way?

Don’t be surprised when a nuke makes it way into terrorist hands. Still, you have to stop paying the danegeld eventually. Might as well get it over with.
