‘Yesterday morning, he was key. Today, I’m not sure’: Bannon’s allies start to abandon him

Former White House chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon’s hopes of leading a revolt in the Republican Party this year suffered a severe blow Thursday as his allies rebuked and abandoned him following a nasty public break with President Trump.

Candidates who once embraced Bannon distanced themselves from his efforts, groups aligned with his views sought separation, and his most important financial backer, the billionaire Mercer family, which has championed him for years, announced that it was severing ties.

Even his position as chairman of Breitbart News, a website he has referred to as one of his most effective “weapons,” was being reviewed by the company’s leadership, according to people familiar with the talks — a move that White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders publicly encouraged at Thursday’s White House news briefing.

But it was the rare statement from Rebekah Mercer, daughter of investor Robert Mercer, that hit hardest and, combined with Trump’s fury, has left Bannon isolated from the two power centers that elevated him from a fringe commentator to an office in the White House.

> he looks like an alcoholic and his words and actions seem a lot like a binge-drinking alkie

That is, unfortunately, also a possibility. Perhaps Trump’s statement, he “lost his mind” is not meant as a verbal slam so much as a polite euphemism for exactly what you describe. If he has that issue, we will certainly learn of it in the months and years to come, if his life bottoms out.

Best explanation I’ve seen, talking to Wolfe was stupid.

Bannon is supposedly the one who invited Wolf to the W.H. and don't forget that he also talked to lefty MSMers, when he still was at on the Trump Team!

He's no Andrew Breitbart, though he thinks that he is and also better than Trump.

Because he said those things out of bitterness because I’m sure he knew his days were numbered.
He invited this loser writer who is known for lacking credibility to the WH.

If it’s fake news, why post it?

Regardless of the true nature of his underlying problem his statements are crazy. Saying that “Donald Trump Jr. speaking to a Russian lawyer is treason” is far beyond the stupidity of the apparent ignorance of what treason is. Saying it for public consumption is indicative of serious mental incapacity. And that is the tip of the iceberg now.

So you’re one of those “if I don’t see it, it doesn’t exist” types?

We didn’t “lose” Steve Bannon. He jumped off a cliff.

The timing of both Bannon's too late statement attempt and the White House cutting him off at the knees before he responded all seems too orchestrated to me.

Maybe that's because nothing ever happens by accident in the scripted and polished political machinations of DC.

Or maybe it's because there seems to be some new revelation or profound breaking news item coming out daily and it's hard to take any of it seriously.

Or maybe it's just because you can't make this shit up.

The only thing coming out of this is the multimillions the Bannon interviewer and the book publisher will make from the book. It’s being released earlier than planned tomorrow morning. It’s all about $$$$

My Creep-o-meter has always been off the scale with Bannon.
The more people defended him with cult like devotion - the creepier the whole thing got.
Who knows what really went on between “Sloppy Steve” and the Trump family.
But the leaks stopped and the whole operation improved without the him.

Bannon has become the preverbal loose cannon on the deck.

His arc in the starlit sky has fizzled. Trumpers need to move on.

Bannon is toxic to Trump right now. Especially after the Roy Moore defeat in Alabama.

This uncredible Wolff character is stirring up a hornet's nest. Bannon will be the casualty of this game. Trump will come out on top yet another time.

Bannon let his hatred for Jared to blind him. Breitbart was becoming the Anti-Jared site. Oh well

I wasn't ever a big Bannon fan and don't understand WHY many here are defending him or repeatedly saying..."wait and see"/"give him a chance", when he hasn't denied his supposed quotes in the book AN D the fact that it was Bannon who brought Wolf into the White House to begin with!

Nobody here knows the factual truth, but he ruined Breitbart and also had that weird 60 Minutes chat, not to mention some other things that should have set off alarms in others.

He was very affective in forming devoted online defenders.
Any wiff of criticism would bring on a wave of “CUCK!” and “NEVERTRUMPERS!”
Didn’t matter if you voted Trump.

The only thing that bothered me a bit about Bannon was that he bears a striking resemblance to Michael Moore.

On Breitbart, but many poster on that site are also on other sites AND needed NO “help” to be Trump supporters. Bannon didn’t really do all that much “for” Trump. It’s ALWAYS been Trump who earned support and loyalty.

> his statements are crazy

That’s why I raised the specter of unchecked mental illness. It causes self-defeating, delusional [crazy] behavior, such as we are led to believe Steve Bannon did.

However, I think this whole Bannon issue is a distraction that is best ignored. Keep our eyes on the ball, which is cleaning house at the FBI/DOJ, so that actual justice can be applied to the bad players like the Clinton Foundation.
