Food Stamp Rolls Decline by More Than 2 Million in FY 2017

The number of individuals receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), otherwise known as food stamps, declined by more than two million in fiscal year 2017, according to data released by the Department of Agriculture.

In fiscal year 2016, the number of individuals receiving benefits from the food stamp program totaled 44,219,363. In 2017, that number dropped to 42,182,443—a decline of 2,036,920.

Food stamp participation has declined roughly 9 percent over the last four years. In fiscal year 2014, there were 46,663,872 individuals on food stamps.

Historical data show that while the program has expanded greatly over time, participation has declined as of late. The USDA has been tracking data on SNAP participation since fiscal year 1969, at which time average participation in the program stood at about 2,878,000. This means that since then, participation in the program has increased 14-fold.

The data indicate that food stamp participation peaked in year 2013, when there was an average of 47,636,000 individuals benefiting from the program.

As of 2017, the program cost taxpayers about $58 billion with individuals receiving an average benefit of $125.05 per month and households receiving an average benefit of $252.55 per month. The number of households receiving food stamps also declined in 2017 from 21,777,938 households in fiscal year 2016 to 20,886,012 households on the program in fiscal year 2017.

Quote from the excerpt (highlighting mine):You couldn't prove that by me as an intake interviewer at a local food bank. Virtually all the folks I interview are on food stamps. And an easy majority of them have been so for years. Lots of folks are very open in admitting they cheat on stamps, some even sharing their methods.

An interesting chart would show the numbers 1, 2, 3, etc. as the number of years on stamps across the top and the number of persons in thousands down the side. I suspect this chart would put a big dent in the propaganda about self-sufficiency and self-reliance.

The amount of fraud and abuse in the food stamp program is breathtaking.

Take a look at the budget for the Agriculture Dept., where that Leftist LBJ hid the food stamp budget. The bulk of the USDA expenditures are welfare programs, such as food stamps and free school lunches.

The amount of fraud and abuse in the food stamp program is breathtaking.

I have known people who work at grocery stores, and they can tell you many stories about the lengths to which some people will go to defraud the Food Stamp programs.

They increased by 15 million under Obama. Trump has a long way to go to get rid of Obama’s Socialism.

Jobs is the best welfare program possible.
Jobs is the best Healthcare program possible.

Repeal and replace...with jobs.

Wrong approach.
Congress doesn’t need to slash the surplus if Trump isn’t going to spend it.
Congress doesn’t need to cut the safety net either.

Trump needs to find ways of investigating and prosecuting the fraud. That’s all that needs to happen.

My 19 year old, white, stepson was on food stamps when he crawled his sorry ass home after leaving 2 weeks after he graduated from HS 9 months earlier! I about stroked out when he told me that!

He’s currently getting 3 hots and a cot and some intense man training now courtesy of the United States Marine Corp in sunny San Diego!

Even so, the fact we still have over 42 million people collecting food stamps is staggering. How did we ever get to such as state?

I've spent my entire adult life slogging off to work, paying my bills, and minding my own business. I would never even consider having somebody else put food on my table for me. I would feel so guilty sitting around the house benefiting from other people's work. But there are few who think like me, obviously.

This entitlement mindset is destroying us utterly.

I'm glad that Trump is chipping away at it but 42 million people on the dole in this country is still a huge problem and I don't know how we fix it. Once people have become accustomed to a life of leisure - provided by the sweat of others - it's hard to get them back into the labor pool.

They just went from SNAP and Welfare to SSI.

Actually, welfare as a program doesn't exist. The two biggies are food stamps and SSI (disability). Both programs are horribly abused. The other program is TANF or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. It is also abused.

I could entertain you all day with stories from my volunteer work at the food bank. Way too many people are 'satisfied' with a disability check, which averages about $700 or so per month, and food stamps. The folks don't live in very nice housing, lots of Section 8, and few of them have a car. But they muddle along month-to-month, living off you and me. The desire to improve themselves just isn't there.

The government has had these programs for so long that it's become a generational thing. Great grand parents, grandparents, parents and kids all sucking the government teat.

You missed the biggie. EITC...

Work just enough to qualify, then quit. File taxes and Presto, Free Money. More spawn, larger check. Freaking RINO Rubio just gave them a Lotto Ticket that wins every year!

Get Check, drop kids at some relative and head to floriduh or Europe for a Month.

Return, Rinse and repeat. Have seen it often.

SNAP should be run like un- employment you have to work so much and can only collect so long. None of this lifetime benefit plan.
