"Im going to deny the transfer, Im going to inform the voter that theyre still registered in [their previous jurisdiction], and Im going to send them an application so they can fill that out, Fairfax County General Registrar Cameron Sasnett said in an interview. (WTOP/Max Smith)
To start with, that means about 5,000 letters to people who submitted some of the most recent address updates. The countys general registrar is accepting similar voter registration updates through the Department of Elections website.
Im going to deny the transfer, Im going to inform the voter that theyre still registered in [their previous jurisdiction], and Im going to send them an application so they can fill that out, Fairfax County General Registrar Cameron Sasnett said in an interview.
The commissioner of the Department of Elections called the decision troubling, and said there is no question that the electronic systems are working and providing significant benefits.
Sasnett and other Virginia registrars are concerned that address updates submitted through the DMV from July 1, 2016 until this fall wrongly appeared when printed out in registrars offices to be completely new applications.
That led to previous documentation for those voters being trashed, plus voter signatures appearing under penalty of perjury on printed forms that they never actually fully completed. The concerns include answers to questions about felony convictions or mental capacity.

Exclusive: Va. knew of issues with voting in wrong House districts before 2017 election
On purpose? Just wondering.
It's a long article, but worth the read (both articles I posted). In essence, there's a battle going on in the Virginia system with those who are convinced that it's absolutely broken and has to be overhauled vs. those who say "let's tinker around the edges". And of course the illegal immigration supporters don't like messing with something that might possibly "disenfranchise" their base.
Thank you for the summary.
And read the article?!?!
My good man, this is FR where it’s every man’s and woman’s God Given Right to comment on the few sentences he/she reads, sometimes just on the thread title. Sometimes without even reading that!! :)

My take is that some are intentionally screwing up the system by making a patchwork out of a voter’s registration record as they move from one district to another. Is it too much to ask the voter to complete a completely new voter registration form after moving to a new address that includes the penalty of perjury certification?
That's what the "overhaulers" want to do - get rid of this capability to just carry your registration over from your old district and re-register. Unfortunately, it would require a change in the Virginia law.
384 potential votes in the wrong district, if you count the ones who didn’t actually vote.
Nice.
In 2018. Glad technology is helping.
Seems like a non partisan issue at least somewhat since the R won.
I know nothing of VA politics.
GAO Highlights June 2005
Additional Data Could Help State and Local Elections Officials Maintain Accurate Voter Registration Lists
This GAO report which is about many states, including Virginia, shows that Virginia accepted FREE HAVA money controlled by the friends of Chris Dodd. Sitting here in GA, I suspect that the HAVA software VA bought from Friends of Dodd with FREE HAVA money is the real culprit.
Why is it that neither the mainstream press nor the Conservatives want to admit that HAVA is the source of much of our election system problems?
Fairfax County has all the illegal voters set. They don’t need real voters to screw that up.
Having lived in the Arlington area for 3.5 years, I would offer this observation of voter registration.
There are a fair sum of people who live in five counties that attach to the DC job market: Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Alexandra, and Prince William. People move on a continual basis. They hunt for the better school district, the better homes, the lesser property tax district, and so on. I worked with some woman who had moved three times in a decade, and each time...moved to a new county. The voter rolls are simply screwed up and unless they dumped them after each election and started fresh...the problem is never going to get fixed.
Adding to the mess is the fact that you have probably three thousand people who live in Arlington but only from Monday morning to Friday afternoon, and then they get onto a plane and fly ‘home’. They camp out in the region for their job. It would not take much for these people to get registered in Arlington, but also be registered in another state. You have the same issue brewing to some degree in DC, where a fair sum of people also fly home on weekends.
DMV registration appears to be a mess too. My daughter had to renew her driver’s license last week. She went, in person, and was told that she had to provide proof of legal residence in the US. She’s been a resident of VA and licensed driver since 1990. She pointed out to the clerk that her letter did not require that proof and the clerk wouldn’t budge. So, she went home and got her birth certificate and returned to stand in line AGAIN. 2nd clerk said 1st clerk was wrong. Needless to say, daughter was spitting mad.
Good grief.
Too fluid.
A good (if not for the horrific lying that would take place) idea would be a website where people could change their info to keep it up to date.
YES, I know. EVERYONE would lie at election time. Too bad.
Maybe they can vote both places???
You'll give away their intent!
The entire theory that it is the government’s responsibility, not yours, to get you registered AT YOUR LOCAL VOTER REGISTRATION location, is wrong. It is nothing other than catering to lazy people who are NOT dedicated to taking their voting responsibility seriously.
The whole Clinton era “easy to register” voter laws should be repealed. Their own great achievement has been the ease with which registering fraudulently has become.

You mean, take some initiative and get off your butt to register???
Do people who are registered in multiple places, vote in multiple places? Of course. Is it a problem? Of course, but I don't think it's enough to swing elections.
Where the problem lies is with the *OLD* unused, outdated registrations, the ones nobody cares about. Dead voters, people who've moved away, and so on. Cleanup for something like this is simple, but many districts refuse to do it, for reasons that are obvious. Unscrupulous poll workers can vote them, any way they'd like, in some places by the bushel basket full.
How else do you think some places get 105% voter turnout, or 117-year-old people casting ballots?
The problem appears to be that the new registration does nothing to cancel out the former registration. But then, neither does death!
That has been reported, but to date I've not seen any documentation that proves the crime. Why is it not being fully investigated, now that the adults are in charge?
