New Mexico Democratic Sen. Jerry Ortiz y Pino has introduced a joint memorial, asking the Legislative Finance Committee to study the potential positives and negatives of a statewide tax on sodas and other sugary drinks. Governor Susana Martinez weighed in on the idea Wednesday, posting her thoughts on Facebook. “Liberal Democrats are pushing a soda tax again…Less than a year after voters in the state’s most liberal city easily rejected a tax on soda, Senate Democrats want to raise taxes on soda statewide. No matter the budget situation, Senate Democrats have tried to raise taxes every year since I’ve been your Governor. I promised you that I would not raise taxes and I’ve kept my word – vetoed over 20 tax increases and cut taxes 37 times, saving New Mexico families and businesses over $1 billion. These policies are working -- we now have a $200 million budget surplus and our state is Top 10 in the nation for economic growth.

Why not a state tax on illegal aliens? Since they want to embrace them, tax them. Then fine the employers for failing to pay the alien employees. Could make any state a mint of money and let the local residents have their sugary snacks and drinks in peace.

Maybe Mr. Ortiz should place a call to the Philadelphia lawmakers there. If memory serves, they instituted a ‘soda tax’ with less than optimal results.

Don’t give in Ms. Martinez.

Probably noted why the Chicago attempt failed miserably, hence the state-wide.

Why do democrats think it is morally good for the state to confiscate money from poor people with what they deem to be unhealthy habits?

How about non-citizens get a special bracket? Say, 50%.

Let’s see. Soda tax to reduce consumption of minorities drinking soda for health reasons and money for schools and stuff then receiver less in taxes then they thought because people weren’t buying enough soda anymore. It’s costing more to manage the tax than received (Seattle).

a statewide tax on sodas and other sugary drinks.

Why do all these soda taxes include diet sodas as well?

Dem logic :

Positives - We get more taxpayer money to spend!
Negatives - We can’t get as much from them as we want (right away)

These things are always just another tax with fig leaf in front of them to make them seem 'reaonable' to the gullible. Take a look at whether or not they tax unsweetened tea at the same rate. That will tell you all you need to know.

I saw a report yesterday that the sugar beverage tax is actually paid by the manufacturers rather than at the point of sale.

An invisible tax after a while, just goes away from the consumer’s mind
