The mob violence doesn’t happen often, but many malls have an uncomfortable undercurrent, that’s keeping many shoppers away. Unsafe parking lots, too.
Probably one-half billion dollars was spent rebuilding Springfield Mall in Northern Virginia. Seemingly no expense was sparred to make it as nice as possible. Unfortunately, a Mosque and Islamic Center opened about two blocks away, and Muslim men now loiter at the mall, along with feral blacks. My wife went there once and the stairs from the Islamic men and harassment from the youths convinced her to never return.
There were a dozen or so Black Friday 2016, IIRC. It wasn’t just 1 or 2.
This sort of thing is a major reason there are so many failing malls. People don’t go where they don’t feel safe - especially older folks with money.
