U.S. holiday shopping season surging towards a strong finish

CHICAGO - A jump in consumer spending in the final stretch of December should build on a strong start to the U.S. holiday season and help the embattled retail industry beat sales forecasts, industry research groups said. The spending boost in December comes ahead of Super Saturday - the last Saturday before Christmas, which often sets the annual record for retail sales and is one of the busiest shopping days of the year along with Black Friday.

First Data Corp, which collected data from point-of-sale systems of 1.3 million physical and online retailers, said strong demand for categories like electronics, appliances, building materials, furniture and home furnishings boosted overall retail spending. During Oct. 28 to Dec. 15 retail spending grew 5.4 percent from last year’s 2 percent.

During the five-day period between Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday this year it grew 8 percent from 5.8 percent last year, according to First Data.

Mastercard Inc’s SpendingPulse report said 2017 is projected to show the strongest holiday season sales growth rate since 2010, with the overall potential to surpass 5 percent year-over-year growth. “This is a consumer saying I have got a job, gotten a raise, even expecting a bonus ... the economy is really humming,” said Sarah Quinlan, senior vice president & group head, Market Insights.

It’s been a total shopping mad house here in Jacksonville, FL. We are close to a 4% GDP quarter. No doubt.

Judging by the number of Packages being delivered to my Front Door, I think my Wife is responsible for most of it.

LOL

The post office has a separate vehicle just delivering packages to my neighborhood this year. He drives around with the wheels about a foot off the ground.

Hey, how is Target doing these days? Guess that we won’t know until after the holidays.

I am not generally a fan of consumerism. However, this is a good time to buy in terms of both preparedness and making the economy look positive. Ruger, Kimber, Armalite, Glock, Remington, and many other fine companies deserve our business this month and all year next year.

The Mailman who I have never talked to walked up to me with a few packages while I was out in the Garage.

He says, here are your Wife’s packages Dave.

He’s getting a Tip this year. LOL

Boy that Trump just sucks, doesn’t he? Just can’t do anything right, except collude with the Russians.

One year — one freakin’ year — and Trump has totally and utterly embarrassed Obama and the Democrats. Eight long years of Obama’s 1.5% growth and being told that that was the new normal, and after dumping $800 billion into “shovel ready jobs” with absolutely no results!

The contrast simply cannot be anymore stark.

After 8 years of Obama’s stagnant economy, Trump got it booming after 13 short months. After being told by Obama that it would be difficult to eradicate ISIS, and would take years, Trump did in just 13 months.

The contrast simply cannot be anymore stark.

The only remaining question is, will the Stupid Party take advantage of what Trump has done for them?

Same here.

Either “a f—— ing box” or “multiple f-—— ing boxes” all the time during Christmas.

I hate boxes for the most part when they wind up sitting around.

If they filmed the Movie “The Graduate” today, the guy would tell Benjamin “Cardboard” instead of “Plastics”.

I’ve practically begged my local mail carrier to “lose” the sheer mountain of catalogs that come in regularly.

The spouse loves dead tree media a lot.

I want it mostly eliminated.

Hubby here. No idea what he’s buying but it seems there’s a package or 2 every single day. Ugh!

How I have come to despise cardboard.

It’s up there with printers, Lotus Notes, ballgames, state fairs, and liberals in terms of things I hate to no end.

When I get a box, it’s opened and trashed asap.

My Wife gets stuff from Kohls, Macys and Pennys.

She opens the Box, looks through it and ends up going back to the Stores to return half of it.

It’s a vicious cycle. I just roll my eyes.

My spouse can top that, no problem.

One of my senior executive types is big on minimalism and I see a lot of merit in it.

There seems to be a never ending stream of stuff coming in and collecting dust.

One year I went into a gift shop and bought ‘all’ presents off from just one two sided shelf. Just had no time for shopping. Took a list and basically was in and out within an hour!
