If these were government-owned laptops, iPads, phones, etc. as well as government-issued email accounts, there was no expectation of ownership or privacy, regardless of what somebody may have said.

Only a complete moron would think that a .GOV email address would never be checked in the future. It used to be, when you sign into those systems, there were disclaimers saying that you have no expectation of privacy, and I'd be willing to bet that they haven't changed all that much.

I was in the military when email became a lot more mainstream among both the military and civilian parts of the government, and some of the disclaimers were borderline ridiculous when you logged into those systems, but every one of them made it abundantly clear that you had no expectation of privacy.

There is a reason why Hillary preferred private email servers.

The owners are those who originated the messages. It is explicitly stated under the law, these are considered private confidential documents and not available to the government without expressed consent of the owners. This is a mass violation of the team members’ rights.
