An MSNBC spokesman confirmed Saturday the company made a separation-related payment to one of Chris Matthews employees after the woman complained about sexual harassment.
Two sources familiar with the situation told The Daily Caller that Matthews paid $40,000 to settle with an assistant producer on his show, “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” in 1999 after she accused him of harassment. An MSNBC spokesperson contested that claim to the Caller, saying the company instead paid significantly less as part of a severance package.

In college, there was one girl just grabbed me and kissed me. Full tongue.
It was not a joke, and it was in a place that was public, but no one else was there at the time.
It was a bit shocking to me. Additionally, she was older than I was, which was also a surprise. I was not into her so I did not pursue her or really talk with her much afterwards. I never really knew her that well. I was a bit of a nerd.
Now, I wonder if that girl would ever experience the possible career-ruining public shaming that men seem to get nowadays for that kind of behavior. (I doubt it.)

Most of us learn appropriate social interaction by trial and error when we are young. I’d say the limits of “young” are around 25 and perhaps also based on experience. Someone who’s been actively dating since the age of 18 (16? 14? 12?) should be socialized long before the age of 25. Someone who is extremely shy and inexperienced might still be fumbling around and making a first pass at 25.
I really don’t think that typical teenage awkwardness should qualify as harassment. That doesn’t mean that the target wasn’t hurt/offended. But I hardly think that an attempted kiss can qualify as a traumatic event, even if unwelcome. Memorable and upsetting, yes. Traumatic, no.
If I had to guess, I’d guess for the girl you kissed it was a first. I’ll bet she remembers it. Maybe with fondness, maybe she finds it amusing. Maybe both.
Chris needs to resign. Period.
