Palestinian billionaire detained in Saudi Arabia in sweeping corruption probe
Family says Sabih al-Masri was held while visiting Riyadh last week in order to 'answer questions about his business and partners'
Palestinian billionaire businessman Sabih al-Masri was reportedly detained in Saudi Arabia for questioning last week during a business trip to Riyadh, amidst a sweeping anti-corruption purge of the Saudi elite.
Masri, who is the founder of Zara Investment Holding and chairman of Jordans largest lender, Arab Bank, was held in the Saudi capital over information related to corruption, according to Arabic-language news reports.
Friends and family sources confirmed Masris detention to Reuters on Saturday.
He has been answering questions about his business and partners, a source told the news agency without elaborating.
According to the Rai al-Youm news website, Saudi authorities did not charge the 80-year-old businessman with any crime.
It was not immediately clear when Masri was released. He and Saudi authorities did not respond to media requests for comment.
Masris arrest comes in the wake of a sweeping anti-corruption purge of the Saudi elite last month by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

John Travolta and Nelly in Saudi Arabia for modernisation plan
American actor John Travolta and singer Nelly are in Saudi Arabia as the ultra-conservative Gulf kingdom undergoes a vast modernisation plan launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Travolta was in the capital Riyadh for a discussion Friday on the secrets of Hollywood, and rapper Nelly gave a concert Thursday in Jeddah on the west coast.
So why doesn’t a Palestinian billionaire businessman help his own “people?”
Notice how they say he is eating out his partners?
Somebody is gonna kill him for them.
But they have to ride side-saddle on the motorcycles.
As I remember nobody wants the Palestinians. They’re Arabs. So why is it OUR problem?
Ratting out his partners.
He has been answering questions about his business and partners, a source told the news agency without elaborating.
Remember the first meeting Trump had in the Mideast? He said ALL participants will be signing on with the anti terrorism statement. (one way or the other)
This is not about corruption. The Arab culture runs on baksheesh; bribes. This is about who is financing terror. The Saudis need some things they can’t get without stopping the support of terror. They need allies and those allies will be the United States and Israel. Therefore, the Saudis must transform their culture if they are to survive. The changes we have seen so far are breathtaking; women driving, arrests of family members most likely for bankrolling terror, and their new free trade city. That city will most likely be financed in some measure and supplied with water from Israel. Also, look for a Saudi pipeline through Israel and Jordan to the Mediterranean. Their current supply routes can be easily choked off with mines, which the Iranians have thousands of.
This is the largest change in Arab culture in 1400 years. It gives me hope for the future.
“So why doesnt a Palestinian billionaire businessman help his own ‘people?’
For the same reasons The Clinton Charitable Crime Foundation helps NO ONE? ;)
Wait...how can there be a Palestinian billionaire? Aren’t they all oppressed and kept down by evil joooz?
I always thought Travolta was a “Nelly”.
Corruption and Arabs are a synthesis. The Sauds will have to arrest the entire population to get to the root of the problem. They breathe wickedness.
the secrets of Hollywood = scientology ? ;-)
“in our world it is asked questions, here it is answered questions. cultural difference?”
In our world it is “please answer these questions. If your lawyer approves.”
There it is “answer these questions or watch your family members suffer horribly. You WILL answer.”
So, yes, a cultural difference.
