I have sure seen a lot of posts, claiming this or that reason, for his loss.
The reason he lost, is the GOPe abandoned him. The same GOPe that is completely sold out globally, sending US manufacturing to our largest threat, go forward. China.
That is what happened. The GOPe is completely sold out.
Trump stood up for the guy. But a lot of the GOP sold him out.
THEY are the reason. Don’t forget the ones who opposed him. Do not forget.
They are the reason a democrat won.
I think that’s too simplistic. They all pretty well hate Cruz, but I can’t imagine any of them are rooting for him to lose next year.
The difference is that while they think he’s an ahole, he doesn’t say or do toxic things that they’ll be made to answer for. They aren’t Democrats. Menendez can have sex with underage prostitutes, but the media will see to it that it doesn’t even get reported let alone demand that other Democrats answer for it. Whereas, every single Republican will be smeared with Roy Moore’s actions from 40 years ago, and there are few charges more toxic than a 30-something year old man hitting on girls in their mid teens. I don’t like the hypocritical battlefield, but this is the environment we have to operate in or we lose.
If this were a midterm general election, Moore’s candidacy would have done incalculable damage. Look at Todd Akin’s comments about rape 5 years ago. All of them including Romney and Ryan disavowed them, but they still used him to trash them all. McCaskill was on life support, and he rescued her. I don’t think Romney would have won anyway, but I bet there were some marginal seats that we lost with his drag on the party.
Correction - The big red George Soros was a huge factor.
Being from Alabama, I will offer this observation.
This entire ‘mess’ is triggered mostly because of our former Governor (Bentley), and his ‘woman-trouble’. One long affair, the hiring of the woman at roughly $200k a year, and the hiring of her husband at a high pay rate....all drew attention and Bentley was at the level to be impeached.
But to get facts, you needed the Attorney General of the state (Luther Strange) to get involved. Luther just didn’t have a speedy process, and this dragged on and on.
Then comes the Trump win....Sessions leaving, and a shock...Bentley appoints Strange. Days later, Bentley announces that he’s leaving (before any impeachment). About 90-percent of GOP voters in the state felt this was all a corrupted mess, and Strange was a crook as well.
The new governor arrives (Kay Bailey), and she decides that she has the power to call for a new election, and force Strange to compete for the job. On ethics, most everyone agree with her idea.
The shock then occurs that Moore intends to compete. No one expected that. If you go and talk to most Alabamian GOP folks....Moore is a bit unusual, and even half of the Republicans in the state will say that he’s a ‘nut’. But we are a forgiving crowd, and Moore had popularity with the Baptist folks of the state.
So Strange shows up to compete against Moore, and a ton of money was dumped from McConnell’s PAC to Strange. It didn’t work. Moore won.
I would offer this view of Jones and what happens in two years with the next election. He won’t ever get 40-odd million of outside-Alabama campaign funding ever again. He also won’t get national news media attention. He won’t get GOP support for a write-in candidate (22,000 votes wasted there). So in my humble opinion, Jones has a limited period of time. He won’t be able to win in the next election.
The whole saga, from the Bentley start-up to now....is an epic piece and worthy of a 500-page story.
Abandoned him? Hell, the bastards did everything short of shooting Moore to ensure his defeat.
In the runup to the 2018 mid-terms, We the People will have an opportunity to deal the GOPe a severe beating — all we have to do is Primary GOPes.
Get good conservative Republicans to unseat GOPe incumbents and then win the General.
Yes, it will be hard work, but replacing the GOPes (and as many LIEberal Democrats as we can) should be our main objective here!
The reason Moore lost is 650,000 Trump-voting Alabamans abandoned him.
