A proposed law giving the government formal powers to send the military into the streets to fight crime in Mexico faces unified opposition from human rights groups and the United Nations.

The “internal security” law currently before Mexico’s Senate passed the lower house of Congress last month, pushed through by President Enrique Peña Nieto’s ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) party.

In a statement opposing the proposed law, U.N. human rights commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said the Mexican government has been using the military to fight organized crime and drug cartels for the past decade, but without success.

“Violence has not abated and many human rights violations and abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture and enforced disappearances, continue to be committed by various state and non-state actors.”

“Adopting a new legal framework to regulate the operations of the armed forces in internal security is not the answer,” he said. …

The problem with most 3ed world nations with crime is their courts are entirely made up of liberals who protect criminals. The solution is either to bypass the courts and kill the criminals directly (Duarte in the Philippines) or fire all the judges and appoint right-wing judges who hate criminals and let the police do their job.

I was initially skeptical about the idea, but now I'm warming to it.

Predictable but unfortunate. During times of chaos, governments try to centralize authority and power when precisely the opposite is the better option. Using military force to fight crime is like using a hammer to kill spiders. You may get the job done, but you will cause a hell of a lot of damage while doing it.

Mexico has very tough firearms laws, which the cartels ignore. Instead they should allow the citizenry to arm themselves. That step would make the cost of crime go up everywhere. Of course, that is a step they will not even consider.

The other problem is that the police are paid VERY little, and are truly at risk of their lives as they have pistols and the criminals have machine guns. Hence, many keep their eyes closed or are simply on the take.

I hear that the marines are the only ones not corrupt, which is why they use them for this task.

According to this link Mexico has had the worst year for violent crime this past year. I wonder to what degree it is a consequence of the fact that border crossings have been reduced by half. More criminals fighting for available territory?? Also now that the marijuana trade is being affected by the fact that use is legal in a number of states, either medical or recreational, could that be a factor. I read that US quality MJ is much better than what comes over the border, so I suspect they are loosing a lot of business, creating more competition among drug dealers. Such a shame, Los Cabos used to be a nice place for a vacation.

US MJ is better because it is carefully cultivated to provide various properties that can be felt by the user. While some are using it to be high, others find it can reduce pain levels safely, unlike deadly opioids, or reduce depression. There have been news reports saying that US MJ is better quality than Mexican and sales are going down for the Mexican import. I have friends living in legal states that report benefits like less fatigue, reduced pain from arthritis in hands and spine, reduced depression after death of 2 elderly pets. Some varieties are more effective for getting high, others have more medicinal actions. Most people I know who are using are responsible members of society who choose and use their MJ in a responsible manner. Since one can legally go to a medical dispensary, or get free material from friends, you can be much more sure of the purity of the product and the information on strength and dosage.

This link answers your question in much more detail. Included is the fact that wealthy Mexicans are getting imported US MJ.

Here is a more complex report on what is happening in US versus Mexico regarding MJ. Also many comments.

I can personally attest that US quality MJ is much better than what comes over the border.
