The Trump Administration Is Making Progress on Veteran Affairs

Whether you’re on the right, left, or squarely in the middle, we can all agree that veterans aren’t treated nearly as well as they should be in this country. In fact, they’re blatantly disrespected in many ways. But how is President Trump, who made lots of campaign promises to veterans, doing on this issue after roughly a year in office?

Where Trump Found Things

When Barack Obama entered office in 2009, he found the veterans of this country in the middle of a decades-long plight, which he promised to fix many times during his campaign for the presidency.

“Caring for those who serve -- and for their families -- is a fundamental responsibility of the Commander-in-Chief,” Obama said in a 2007 campaign speech. “It is not a separate cost. It is a cost of war. It is something I've fought for as a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs. And it is something I will fight for as President of the United States.”

Perhaps Obama did fight, but he certainly didn’t get any results. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is in worse shape than it’s ever been. Scandals, abuse of funds, and a toxic workplace culture are just a few of the issues plaguing the VA, and they all seemed to be exacerbated under the Obama administration.

Even something as seemingly simple as trying to locate and receive military documents that are needed in order to apply for things like VA mortgages, retirement benefits, and employment is nearly impossible to do on your own. Most veterans end up using a service like DD214 Direct to streamline the process.

Get rid of the “Magic VA Disability Table” where a 20% disability “magically” becomes 2%.

There’s no reason for it except to screw disabled Veterans out of disability.

I see you dabble in the dark arts of VA disability maths.

Let me show you how 30%, 20%, and 10% all add up to 32%

They are trying...got me another VA surgery tomorrow...and as bad as they are, the surgeries don’t seem to be as painful as navigating the paperwork.

If you want some entertainment, ask a VA employee what the purpose of that table is.

“Ummmmm.....well......”

They know the purpose is to administratively reduce a Veteran’s disability rating.

That way, there’s more money for the VA bureaucrats to steal.

The VA is a difficult game to play. I requested my service records from the NPRC and got a reply back saying the VA has them. I applied to the VA 6 months ago, still waiting. My VSO says it may take a year to get them, all the while I need them for a claim.

I tried their Choice program, another paperwork nightmare. This one I’m backing out of and going back to using my medical insurance as working directly with a doctor is faster and most importantly less stressful. I feel sorry for the Vet that cannot afford insurance and keep the hell away from the VA.

While I have occasionally received help from DAV, I find the VA has treated well beyond my expectations.

Timely with consideration of and initial or expanded claim, and the medical care is the very best I ever had. I prefer them to any other provider.

It appears that the level of service is dependent upon which Tier of disability you are in.

If you are 50% or more service-connected (Tier 1), you receive superb care and treatment.

I believe the system was DESIGNED that way.

As a 10% disability recipient, I have had nothing but superb service at my local VA.

I go to a VA hospital in the central plains. I’ve had nothing but good experience with them. That said, I’m not applying for disability, nor surgery. I have general care.

One day I went in and noticed some “floaters” in my left eye. I went to the eye clinic. They told me I needed a consult from my primary physician. I walked over to the clinic, got the consult and they walked me back to the eye clinic where an appointment was made that day. I had to wait 45 minutes and saw the ophthalmologist. In total it was about 2 hours from initial complaint to being seen. Pretty fast if you ask me.
