What Being a Dad with a Gun Taught My Daughter
American Thinker ^ | Dec 09, 2017 | Don Cicchetti

Years ago, my daughter Samantha and I were home in the afternoon (she was off school, and I was home with her) when there was a loud knock on the front door. When I answered, I discovered that there were about a hundred cops, including SWAT (tactical truck and all) at my door and in my front yard. They did not look happy.

"Yes? Can I help you?" I asked, as I got about a hundred hard stares from our guests.

"Daddy, how many cops are out there?" Sam asked.

"All of them, I think..."

"Sir, there was a bank robbery, and we think the robber is hiding in your backyard," said a highly impatient and well armed young man at my door. "Could you open your backyard gate?" Well, I wasn't going to miss this, so I grabbed the key, and, with many cops accompanying me, we opened up the gate. Then I was shooed back into the house and told to stay down.

So I went back in the house and got Sam and my nice Ruger 9mm, and we sat down on the floor of the kitchen, because that's the place with the most walls between us and the outside world, which could be filled with bullets and anger at any moment.

While waiting, she asked me: "Daddy, what if the robber gets in our house?"

"Well, he would have to get past all those cops, and they all have guns, huh?"

"Yeah." She smiled for a moment but then got serious again.

"What if he gets past the cops somehow?"

"Well, he would have to get past the bars on the windows, huh?"

"What if he breaks the bars and gets in the house?"

"Well honey, what do you think will happen then?"

"You'll shoot him!"

Cute story but it sounds more like a fantasy. SWAT teams don't hang outside your door waiting for permission to search your yard for bank robbers.

If they have lost sight of the robbers (i.e., immediate pursuit has failed) and have no evidence of the suspects’ immediate location, they actually *do* have to ask to enter a property or get a warrant as they are no longer in hot pursuit and there are no exigent circumstances.

Like they did when they lost sight of the Tsarnaev brothers?

I suspect this story is essentially true. It rings true, especially his daughter’s reactions.

My daughters once decided to go to Baltimore for culture and asked me to go with them because of the walk in the dark. There was a small amount of far more aggressive than normal harassment from local “teens”, and once we got back to our car my daughters talked nonstop about their (accurate) realization that I was armed and their (inaccurate) impression that they had been completely safe. I explained the limits of that protection, which seemed to matter intellectually but not for their feelings. They have shot with me and seen me shoot, and I don’t think they fully understand the difference between accurate against paper and accurate in the real world. They have all since then told me that guns are a requirement for any man worth marrying. That outcome more than makes up for the extreme stress of that outing.

I suspect most people have a few of those experiences that go further than ordinary harassment into the realm of serious concern, or beyond. My wife and I had one long ago that left her pro-gun. I had another, relatively recently, that had the strongest effect on me because it was the closest I’ve come to actions that would entangle me with the legal system.

Not exactly - more like what they do in Los Angeles every time a car chase ends in the occupants bailing out and they get loose in an area away from any eyes on the ground or the sky. They cordon off the area and then go door to door searching. Anywhere they aren’t allowed into or nobody is home, they will visually inspect from outside the property as best they can, maybe set up a secondary cordon, and then get a warrant by phone. It doesn’t take long to do that.

Trust me cops in hot pursuit don’t knock on the door and politely ask to go in your back yard. I almost threw down on two Deputy Sheriffs that chased a car thieve into my horse barn. The dog went on silent alert at their presence and I drew my weapon and confronted them. Both had their backs to me at the time. It was a very close deal.

Remember the scenes from Boston? Cops were going wherever they pleased.

A story from my child hood around 1965 there was a pair of escapees doing home in invasions in Northern MN and Wis.

I clearly remember Dad loading his 38 colt officers model and letting the family know that is how he plan to take care of the problem.

If they would show up at are very rural farm.

"Well, he would have to get past the bars on the windows, huh?"

If he has bars on his windows, he needs to at least think about moving to another neighborhood.

Took the grand-kids fishing and the 8 year girl old noticed my gun on my hip. She said, “Pop-pop, are you a cop?” I told her no but I was their protector. She grinned and went skipping down the pier and never mentioned it again - just takes it for granted.

I have a similar story. My son in law and 4 year old grand daughter wanted to go for a walk in my woods. Recently a black bear had taken down one of my bird feeders so I gave a can of bear spray to my SIL and showed him how to use it. We were in the woods for about 10 min and my grand daughter says “Grampa I’m scared, what if the bear comes?” I told her “don’t worry your dad has the bear spray, it won’t bother you”. That calmed her down for about 5 minutes, then she starts crying and says “Grampa I’m afraid of the bear”. I told her “Don’t worry, the bear is not going to bother us” and I show her the big bore snubby revolver on my hip”. Her eyes got wide and she says “are you going to shoot the bear”? “Not if it leaves us alone” I told her. After that she was fine and didn’t mentioned the bear again.

Violence is neutral, like gravity.

It can be used for good or evil.

Police in the United States vary enormously, based on where they are.

There is a huge difference between Seattle and Chicago. An even greater difference between rural areas and urban inner city.

On several ocassions I arranged to be cleaning my guns at the kitchen table when my daughter arrived home with her date. The conversation that insued with the young man told me a lot about him. It was a great venue to get to know him.

Some freaked (and were rarely seen again), some knew little about guns but were interested, some engaged in a great discussion on make, caliber, capacity, carry, etc.

My two adult daughters used to rent a house with two other girls. One day, my daughter looked out and there was a police car parked on the front lawn. She finally walked out to ask what’s up?

A prisoner had escaped and they thought he was in the area so had a cordon set up.

A couple minutes later, my other daughter gets home. The basement had an outside entrance and they were a little nervous. My daughter grabbed her pink Ruger LCP380 and the three girls proceeded to clear the house. It must have looked like a bad outtake of Charlie’s Angels. However, I’m glad they had the means to do it.

House was clear and prisoner was caught a couple blocks away.

I used to take my kids to the range about once a month. As we would pull into the parking lot they would recite in unison the 4 rules of gun safety. They knew that they could not get out of the car until it was done, so they just took care of it on their own.

My daughter, about 11 at the time, moved one of the targets to about 20 feet from the firing line, put a 9mm, 9 shot, 2” group through it. She took it home and put it in the washroom window (which was probably the most likely one someone might to break into) with a little note on it that said, “Are you sure you want to do this?” ;o)
