I recall reading that "Midnight Cowboy" was so low budget, they couldn't get all the public filming permits, and close down streets in NYC, so in that scene (and many other street scenes,) the camera crew was doing "guerilla shooting, setting up quick, getting the shot, and running like hell. According to the atricle, that was a real cab that nearly hit Dustin, and that was his "spur of the moment reaction." It wasn't written into the scene.
