The battle for the hearts and minds of Alabama voters will be decided next Tuesday. The end result may have little to do with the sensational headlines of Republican Roy Moores private life after all.
It appears the bigger issue may be abortion. The topic is one of extreme sensitivity in this southern state. Moore is a staunch advocate of the anti-abortion movement, whereas his opponent, Democrat Doug Jones, supports abortion rights.
A 2014 poll by the Pew Research Center found 58 percent of those polled in Alabama say abortion should be illegal in most or all cases. That statistic is higher than all but three states. That has become an issue that takes the heat off Moores ongoing scandal concerning alleged relationships with underage girls? Moores campaign is banking on Alabamans conservative principles.
Moores campaign chairman Bill Armistead seized on the issue in an interview recently with The Hill. He said, Nothing is more precious in the sight of most people than the life of the child, so I can see why people in Alabama would be enraged knowing that Doug Jones is willing to take the life of a child.
Although the comment is extreme in nature, it appears to be resonating with Alabama voters. Armistead continued, Alabamians are pro-life and as they find out how extremely liberal Doug Jones is on this and other issues like transgender bathrooms, they are going to flee from him. Voters need to be educated on the candidates and the issues regardless of what they are regardless of what other allegations are out there, he said.
Jones has stated his pro-abortion stance publicly on a number of national news shows ranging from liberal MSNBC to The Huffington Post. In a conservative state like Alabama, that can be disastrous.

Conservatives need to stop using the term Abortion Rights, which is Orwellian rhetoric that portrays murdering babies as a right.
“abortion rights”
Loaded term. Both sides argue for abortion rights, one for the right to kill, the other for the right not to be killed.
Abortion is the main tool for rapists .... but this is none of my business...
This election hinges on how many people in Alabama are awake and whether they admire America as it has been.
Jones is going to get crushed!
Hey, Flake! “Country Over Party” is an endorsement of Moore, not Jones, you moron.
This is about as fake as you can get for journalistic writing. I doubt if the writer has ever been to the state or chatted with anyone.
If you asked a thousand folks from the state (I’m one) to rate issues....the bulk (98-percent) won’t rate abortion in their top one-hundred issues. If you were lucky, with a list of 500 issues....it might come up to the 400-level with thirty-percent. It just isn’t that important.
These journalists, especially from WaPo....need to get in a car and spend ten days driving around the state.
No such thing as abortion rights. Just pro-abortion and pro-life.
Although the comment is extreme in nature
Extreme in nature? I bet the baby and God would say no comment is as 'extreme' as abortion.
The problem with your picture...is that as you drift about twenty feet from that waterfall...there’s probably a dozen snakes laying there and waiting for you to walk by. On snakey-ness....I’d rate Alabama near the top.
Lucky you! :) I grew up in Chicago and when I was young, traveled around the country and have never met any friendlier people than Southerners.
I especially like that expression, "Bless his heart." LOL! Chicagoans would just say F*** you. LOL! Very polite and friendly people, seriously.
Still trying to decide who has the better barbecue, Eastern Southerners or Texans. Quite the conundrum. ;)
Moore will win in a landslide...
Although the comment is extreme in nature,
Just ohow is that extreme? How is what Jones wants any other than that?
