Russian Foreign Ministry 'Alarmed' by Trump's Recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's Capital
The Moscow Times ^

The Russian Foreign Ministry has expressed "serious concern” over U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, calling it a change in policy that risked destabilizing the Middle East.

Trump on Wednesday delivered on a campaign pledge to officially acknowledge Jerusalem as the Isreali capital. The U.S. State Department, he added, would move the U.S. consulate from Tel Aviv to the holy city.

The move was met with criticism from world leaders who say the decision may spark an uptick in violence across the region. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas called Putin several days before Trump’s announcement, the Kremlin said.

“It is alarming that the U.S.’ new position on Jerusalem risks further complicating Palestinian-Israeli relations and the situation in the region as a whole,” the Foreign Ministry said in an online statement. “We call on all sides to show restraint and refrain from actions that could have unforeseeable consequences.”

The ministry also urged free access to religious sites in Jerusalem for people of all faiths.

Russia’s position on the issue remained unchanged, the ministry added. Russia says Israel and the Palestinians should work towards "a peaceful and secure Israel within internationally recognized borders while recognizing the Palestinian people’s aspirations for their own, independent state."

Russia considers a possible solution to be a Jerusalem that is the capital of two states: East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state and West Jerusalem as the Israel capital.

Whatever happened to motive? I know it’s not needed in a court of law but how about the court of common sense?

What motive would Putin have for wanting Trump to win?

He could have sat back and watched the Complete decline and end of the US under hitlery.

I am glad you see this clearly. His motive overall is to create chaos so as to weaken USA and “the West” and reclaim lost glory to avenge the fall of the Soviet Union and Russian Empire.

But also: to convince his countrymen that American democracy is a sham - lest they get the crazy idea they want something like it too. Had Hillary won, this would have proved his narrative that only the establishment wins.

I know I really cannot jump to this conclusion quite..... yet, but when did, or does Meshech begin thinking about organizing an invasion of Israel?!

I didn’t see as clearly as you.

Wow. You nailed what he wants and wanted all along.

Oh boy.

Some here were “thanking God” for Putin.

I NEVER did and never will. He’s KGB. He’s using the church to his own purposes.

Spok, you are so right! There have been times I have worried about Trump’s diplomatic rhetoric towards the Chinese, Turkish, and Russian governments. (Because in a perfect world we wouldn’t need to *deal* with such duplicitous people...who don’t even care about their citizens so much as themselves and their power!)

I’m like: “please don’t be so nice to them!” — But then I remember...

He is the billionaire. He has done business internationally. He knows what he is doing. And this Jerusalem decision took so much boldness! And you know what? I even think the Palestinians will eventually cooperate on his terms! He is the only leader under which I can imagine that being possible.

For all their faults, these leaders know immediately and instinctually: they can’t mess around with the U.S. anymore.

And that goes for the Mexican government too.

It’s coming - Gog is the captain of them. Iran, Libya, Turkey...etc. Persia, Put(Phut), House of Togarmah, (respectively).

And apparently some part of Sudan. Interesting that Israel sent jets to bomb trucks in Sudan not that many years ago.

Wow! SunkenCiv, can you expand on that please? Terrorism and Soviet connection? I have heard such things in passing but never expanded upon.

I still recognize St Petersburg as Russia’s Capital. It was illegal for the Bolsheviks to move it to Moscow.

The Moscow Times. Are they the Russian equivalent of our NY Times?

Thanks, I couldn’t get that one to load here, but I think I found a copy on a different website. I’d be surprised if the Russians build a base in Sudan, but if they did, the main reason would be to support interdiction against the Somalian pirates. Having the Russians *and* Iranians (already in Eritrea) overlooking the most important sealanes in the world won’t help anyone sleep better, particularly in the Gulf States. Building a second major route overland from Aqaba to the Med won’t help, short of building enough pipeline capacity across the landscape to obviate the need for tankers to enter the Red.
