N.J. argues that it can legalize sports betting, and Supreme Court seems to agree

A majority of the Supreme Court seemed ready Monday to allow New Jersey to proceed with its plan to legalize sports betting at casinos and racetracks, a move that could open a rush among states to grab a share of what is now billions of dollars in illegal gambling.

Several justices suggested that they agreed with New Jersey’s argument that a federal prohibition from 1992 barring states from authorizing sports betting is flawed because the law forces states to keep in place a betting ban that their residents no longer favor.

Nice to have a Supreme Court that believes in the 10th Amendment.

Might as well legalize it. Don’t people still do Office Betting Pools? As long as the people are of age, it is a crime without a proper victim.

I read in the summer that the Attorneys General of a few states — West Virginia, Arizona and Wisconsin spring to mind but that is a hazy recollection — would be very interested in taking the necessary steps to legalize in their states. I would imagine others would follow suit. I gather Nevada could be opposed to this.

Good heavens! What ever shall we do about all of these legalized activities and contraband?

I mean, it's as if the People are actually willing to let freedom ring, or something!

How distasteful! Surely there should be more criminalization of activities which don't infringe on anyone else's rights—not less!

I suppose that only applied to new states, not the state where it was already legal, Nevada. I wonder what Sheldon Adelson paid to get that passed.

The churches are the logical entities to address moral issues. God wants people to use their resources more wisely than to gamble them away or to drug them away, but one size fits all sumptuary laws with no widespread support are a lose in a representative democracy.

It is better that we confess where we are and not try to be hypocrites. Let God, not government, be the reason we pursue wise things.

If we had less of a welfare state, this idea would sell better.

If someone is on public assistance and has the funds to gamble, it is time to cut the person from public assistance. I don’t care, any thing from lotto tickets on up.

This kind of policy is hard to dispute. Though it’s easy to understand why the grindingly poor would reach desperately for a way out of their plight.

I wouldn’t want to see it become a state cash cow. That’s morally wrong. Let private entities carry it on.
