Climate Change and Water Woes Drove ISIS Recruiting in Iraq
[Snip]
Across rural Iraq and Syria, farmers, officials, and village elders tell similar stories of desperate farmhands swapping backhoes for assault rifles. Already battered by decades of shoddy environmental policies, which had hobbled agriculture and impoverished its dependents, these men were in no state to navigate the extra challenges of climate change. And so when ISIS came along, propelled in large part by sectarian grievances and religious fanaticism, many of the most environmentally damaged Sunni Arab villages quickly emerged as some of the deep-pocketed jihadists foremost recruiting grounds.
You sure it wasn’t a typo? black-... maybe?
Myself also. This once great magazine has become nothing but a political rag. I grew up with National Geographic and looked forward to each magazine and their most wonderful maps. Back then there was no politics in the magazine. The things I learned from the Geographic inspired me to work all over the world and see for myself what they brought to me in my youth. It was superb.
National Geographic has committed sucidide.
The prevailingwind in the northern hemisphere blows from West to East mostly. The Himalayan mountains had nothing to do with it.
Slight correction to my post. The Northern Sahara is mostly West to East. The Southern Sahara is East to West and the abundant moisture Sub Sahara enjoys comes from the Indian Ocean. Mid Sahara is dry as hell as the winds flow mostly over continental Asia and thus not oceanic and thus not much rain. Oddly enough their is a fair amount of rain on the North Coast of Africa courtesy of the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea.
I totally hear you. I have 38 years of it in pristine condition (I take care of my stuff) in the leather slipcovers. After the last two years, it looks like kindling to me now. Ugh.
They are headed towards zero readers soon enough.
