"The chemist who helped Russia's athletes benefit from banned substances kept very detailed notes, which the International Olympic Committee is relying on as it decides what penalities to impose on Russia before the Pyeongchang Games."
Olympic officials will announce their decision Dec. 5. If they do not bar Russia completely from the coming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, they are likely to keep all Russian emblems out of the games: The Russian flag would not fly at the opening and closing ceremony, Russian athletes would compete in neutral uniforms and the Russian anthem would not be played. Such restrictions, Russian officials have said, would be tantamount to an outright ban, and Russia would consider boycotting the 2018 Olympics.
The chemist is Grigory Rodchenkov, who spent years helping Russias athletes gain an edge by using banned substances. His diaries cataloguing 2014 and 2015 his final years as Russias anti-doping lab chief before he fled to the United States provide a new level of detail about Russias elaborate cheating at the last Winter Games and the extent to which, he says, the nations government and Olympic officials were involved.

Olympics during the cold war years became an instrument for the communist countries to exhibit the superiority of their governments and communism. East Germany was, perhaps, the worst as they actually scientifically identified which children could become best athletes and actually ripped them away from their families, placing them into specialized sports academies. Those who didn’t live up to expectations were punished. Children minds were warped, suicides were prevalent. But they did produce great athletes in all sports disciplines.
This guy is lucky he’s still alive.... but how long will he last?
There was time I believed the meme that the Olympic athletes were a group of amateurs competing for personal satisfaction and national pride. Then I grew up and realized that they are all pros, often in it for the endorsements and/or paid employees of their country.

Rodchenkov should be shot for lying, like Stalin would have done, Olympic official Leonid Tyagachev said on a Russian radio station, according to the Guardian.
“Tyagachevs remark may sound like hyperbole but Russia has a long history of killing political opponentstwo former doping officials died under mysterious circumstances last yearand Rodchenkov fled to the U.S. over fears for his safety.”
