Carroll County Public Schools have halted field trips to Baltimore, a decision based on a recommendation from the county Sheriff’s Department due to “escalating violence,” a school system spokeswoman said Monday.
“In light of recent violence in the traditional tourist areas of the City, the Sheriff agrees that the best course of action is to temporarily suspend travel to Baltimore City venues,” Sheriff’s Department spokesman Cpl. Jonathan Light wrote in the statement.
Several assaults and robberies were reported over the Halloween weekend, and an employee of a Federal Hill bar was robbed and killed outside a convenience store near Key Highway on Nov. 14, police said. Earlier this month the city’s homicide count surpassed 300 for the third year in a row.
Field trips are still being considered on a “case-by-case basis,” Gaddis said, but the policy has caused at least two upcoming trips to be canceled.
A planned field trip on Friday to the Maryland Science Center in the Inner Harbor by third-grader students from Westminster Elementary School has been canceled. Francis Scott Key High School’s band has also backed out of the Mayor’s Annual Christmas Parade in Hampden on Sunday. Both schools cited the county’s new policy as the reason for the cancellations.

Who in their right minds would send their kids on a field trip here?
the only way for these kids to learn about protecting themselves is to see these animals up close. Add an armed cadre of security and they’ll be fine. I’m sure one or some of the kids will ask why they’re armed...
Must be those Trump supporters in Baltimore.

Give every third grader a piece before the trip .....

Yep. Some 20-25 years ago when my now adult kids were 5-6 years old, I’d let them watch ‘COPS’ with me. I’d explain these were bad guys and they did bad things. And they went to jail.
Early on, my kids learned what bad guys looked like and what they did and those lessons were well learned.
So yeah. Bus in some little white snowflakes into Baltimore. Make sure there are plenty of armed security personnel. Give these kids an education.
Rather than go to Baltimore, the kids should be made to watch The Wire

We actually went to Baltimore and the inner harbor and took the water taxi around to all the quaint, historic cities circling the harbor in the spring of 2016. We loved it. It was one of the best cities we visited on that trip. We had a luxury condo right in the city we found on Airbnb. We had always planned to go back if we were ever in the area again, but not now! I’ll never go back with the situation the way it is now.
