So much then for the JEPD theory of the Pentateuch (written, according to the theory, by a variety of late authors with varying concepts about the nature of God).

I'm not sure how this does away with JEPD. I was very slow to recognize that the Torah is a compilation, but I have. But that fact that it is a compilation doesn't mean that the narratives in it are false. In fact, if separate groups of Hebrews have legends about what obviously describe the same event (e.g. the exodus from Egypt) each tends to confirm the other.
