Trump administration to end provisional residency protection for 50,000 Haitians
Washington Post ^ | 20 Nov 2017 | Karen DeYoung and Nick Miroff

The Trump administration has given more than 50,000 Haitians with provisional legal residency in this country 18 months to leave, announcing Monday that it will not renew the Temporary Protected Status that has allowed them to remain here for more than seven years.

The decision came after the Department of Homeland Security determined that the “extraordinary conditions” justifying their presence following a 2010 earthquake “no longer exist,” according to a senior administration official.

Haitian government officials, and a number of Florida lawmakers, had asked that the Haitians be allowed to remain, citing ongoing economic and political difficulties in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, as well as a still-raging cholera epidemic.

But the official, one of several authorized to brief reporters, said that Acting DHS Secretary Elaine Duke, after extensive research and input from U.S. and Haitian government officials, as well as experts, had “assessed overall that extraordinary temporary conditions” that justified the designation in the first place, “had sufficiently improved such that they no longer prevent nationals of Haiti from returning.”

Both the Nicaraguans and Hondurans have been shielded from deportation since a devastating 1998 hurricane hit those nations.

TPS status for an additional 200,000 Salvadorans, here since El Salvador was struck by a series of earthquakes in 2001, is also due to expire in early January.

Most of those with TPS status arrived here illegally. They have been exempted from deportation under a 1990 law that allows them to legally remain if the executive branch determines that instability and precarious conditions exist in their countries as the result of natural disasters or armed conflict.

Successive administrations have repeatedly renewed TPS status of the Central Americans and Haitians for between six and 18 months.

Well, this administration understands that the word "temporary" in Temporary Protected Status means "not permanent."

I’d assume many of them are voting and sadly most probably vote dem. No evidence just an instinct.

So this is good. I hope they do well back at home.

This is a win for everyone. They’ll no longer be on the dole and when they return home they will help transform Haiti with the Americanized way of getting things done.

I’m feeling warm and fuzzy.

The Haitian community in Florida used to own local businesses to support the community, had a good work ethic, generally looked down on the entitlement seeking of American blacks.

I don’t how they voted, but wouldn’t be surprised if they were not a Democrat monolith. Times change, though, it’s entirely possible they morphed into gimme dats.

A sign but actions involving removal of people would make it more meaningful.

Starting tomorrow, nonstop articles about tearing more families apart, their kids were born here, how they’ve become hard-working Americans, how they’ve started businesses, etc.

They also comprised some of the worst elements in south Florida. I remember one Haitian gang doing home invasions. Before they left they cut off the arms of the home owners - for fun.

It started over the weekend with Nicaraguans now getting the boot, after being spared deportation under the TPS program because there was a hurricane in Nicaragua 31 years ago.

Making America Great Again means making it “Great for Americans!” Not for these “special classes” of illegal aliens. Yeah, it’s really nice to live here. Way better than the $hit hole country you escaped from. That does not mean we have to keep you. We should never have allowed them to come here in the first place. Right now, as I am writing this, I am watching some lying Mexican bastard on Tucker Carlson, saying it is “our obligation as a world leader” to take these “poor people.” This little CSer is just another of the smarmy Mexicans who have managed to become citizens here, and are now working like termites to get “their people” into this country under any available “good sounding” pretext. I finally had to hit the mute button.

If not them, then likely their children would. Black "culture" in the US is contagiously toxic.

Soooooo......SEE YA!

They can take their skills and knowledge learned here to improve life in their home country of Haiti.

What do you mean 7-8 years? The country has been a cesspool since the early 1800s. If they would have adopted French culture like the DR adopted Spanish culture, they wouldn’t be in the mess that they are in now.

No need for removal orders. They will all self-deport to Canada. Many likely already have this year. More than 12,000 crossed the U.S. border into Quebec so far this year, the vast majority Haitians. If the President issues a similar edict to illegal Mexican and Central Americans, Canada will be flooded in 2018. Free bus tickets to the 49th parallel. 🚌

From what I understand, since these people have been allowed here since the earthquake provision, which is 7-8 years. Now they need to do the same with the Hondurans and Salvadorans who were cited in the article, which have been here longer than that.
