Resistance to a ban on military-style assault weapons is strongest among millennials, according to a new Quinnipiac poll released this week. Its a finding that experts said might be driven by the popularity of first-person shooter video games such as Call of Duty and increasing prominence of military-style guns in the consumer market.
A large majority of Americans say they support a ban on the sale of assault weapons, a category of politically controversial guns that includes the AR-15-style rifles that have become the weapon of choice for mass shooters.
The previous national federal ban on assault weapons lapsed more than a decade ago, and Congress has not renewed it. Military-style rifles, which play a prominent role in Americas most horrific mass shootings, are used in only a tiny fraction of Americas overall gun murders. Consumers legally own millions of AR-15 style rifles, which gun enthusiasts modify and adapt with different accessories.
Opposition to an assault weapon ban was strongest among Republicans and among self-identified registered voters 18-34, the poll found. Unlike older Americans, millennials were closely divided on their support for an assault weapon ban, with 49% supporting and 44% opposing a ban.
There was huge support for a return to banning the sale of assault weapons from voters over 50, with 70% support from over-50s and 77% support from over-65s.
None of the other gun control questions in the Quinnipiac Poll had such a striking age divide, said David Yamane, a sociologist at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, who studies the culture of legal gun ownership in America.
There does seem to be something in particular about assault weapons, and it could be due to the normality of assault weapons for people who have come of age playing first-person shooter games like Call of Duty, he said.

I doubt those in the 40s want it much either. We had 10 years of it under Clinton and it did jack squat. No way today’s youngsters are going to want to ban semi auto rifles and hi cap mags.
Cali has a ton of laws regulating black rifles and high capacity magazines and it does not stop criminals from doing a thing.
The whole assault weapons ban or controlling a firearm by how it looks is pure stupidity. The left has really gone off the deep end over this one. The left are gun ignorant and gun stupid and damn proud of it.
This generation will end liberty in the United States.
Molon Labe biotches!!!!!
“Cali has a ton of laws regulating black rifles and high capacity magazines and it does not stop criminals from doing a thing.”
And we who want them, all have them. CA, with the nation’s largest population, we also have the second highest number of gun owners marginally behind Texas.
Texas: 8,733,384 35.9%
California: 7,829,170 21.3%
What do you mean this "generation" clyde? It might end in this generation but this generation sure as hell is not responsible for ending it. It is the generations prior to it that sat on our lazy a$$es and did not pick up our weapons and in unison march on DC and pull those stealing bastards from their granite fiefdom and put them up on spikes lining the roads. We are to blame...

I suspect the younger people have no illusions about the race and class strife engulfing this country, while older people assume they’ll be gone before it comes to a head. The thrust of the story was that younger people OPPOSED the assault weapons BAN, while older people supported it.
Do you have any firearms there in Spain?
Also a fair number of Millenials have served in the military due to 9/11, and they have friends. One of the nieces has a fiancé who did a tour of Afghanistan. He was the guy toting the M240. He doesnt have an AR though - he spent the big bucks on an FN SCAR 17S and an ACOG.
My Daughter and her circle of friends fit this category.
I have quite a bit of contact with them.
They respect me as a subject matter expert on guns and gun legislation.
When asked why I am different than other online sources of information, they say: you use facts, logic, and back up your arguments with links to sources. The facts are on the side of the Second Amendment.
Some of the respect for Second Amendment comes from having access to so much information online.
What the hell is an assault weapon?
What the hell is an assault weapon?
It appears to me that REAL liberty ended long ago in this country. My question is whether there is any hope of regaining it.
No state of the nation that I would personally regard as liberty could possibly exist until all existing laws and regulations are declared null and void and a new set of laws, written in agreement with the constitution, are passed. It would be best if several existing constitutional amendments were also repealed. I see the chance of that happening as about the same as the chance of Hillary Clinton becoming sane.
There are sure a lot of 18-34s at the range with black sport utility rifles. Obviously not snowflakes.
Mighta found some of the "good ones". d:^)
