Big-game trophy decision will be announced next week but will be very hard pressed to change my mind that this horror show in any way helps conservation of Elephants or any other animal.

Good luck Mr. President.
The supposed bull elephants in our nation are pointing a gun at their own head.

This is typical leftist do-gooderism that always have unintended consequences. Not directed at Trump, but at the knee-jerk leftists who want Africa to ban trophy hunting without giving a rat's ass how trophy hunting helps control the population and provides income and employment to Africans.
Same thing with climate change.
Africa needs to industrialize. They need free markets and free people who believe in one language/one nation instead of having 100 different tribes speaking different languages. That's why you have these civil wars in Africa. Why all their leaders are military dictatorships or corrupt kleptocrats.

On another note and sometime in the future, his more knowledgeable and two eldest sons Eric and Don on hunting may persuade him to come up with a better solution that he can articulate to the 'virtue signalling' liberal Luddites.

Call me a liberal, but I’m on the side of the elephants on this one.

Elephants are going to go extinct because the demand for ivory is so high (gee, thanks China!) that poachers will risk getting shot to get it.
I wonder if making the ivory trade legal but creating some sort of incentive (besides just market prices) to harvest elephants would help increase the number of elephants? Probably not cost effective.

From your source:
But a 2012 ground study indicates that these elephants too are highly threatened by poaching and habitat loss.
Exactly the things that trophy hunting works against.

Looks likes that National Geographic article is mostly about over poaching and everyone is against that. Control poaching and regulated hunting which the proceeds can hire game wardens to protect the wild animals.

Yeah, me too. Im solid on the patriotic right, but I stand with forceful preservation of elephants, whales and others. But as to certain frogs, minnows & insects...not so much.

didn’t Ducks Unlimited save a whole bunch of ducks/duck habitats by hunting?
Seems CONTROLLED hunting/eating would be better than the current system.

Yes, I know. Killing more elephants means there will be more elephants.
You know what, I’m just not buying it.
Why it takes all the pressure off loss of habitat and poaching.
Do you honestly think ivory poaching will go to zero because they allow hunters to kill elephants? I know the answer, but I don’t agree.
As for habitat, it’s not going to help that either.
