“If you had an African-American character — even a cartoon — with the types of stereotypes done for Apu, people would understandably, and very rightfully, raise hell and the studio would say, ‘We can’t do this. This is not funny,’” said Penn.

You were saying?

They had the guy that played saxophone. That was a stereotyped black guy. No one complained.

As for African-Americans, the doctor is black. He does have a hysterical laugh, but he is also a well-educated doctor.

According to a fansite, the man is pretty bright:

“Dr. Hibbert is the Simpson’s kind-hearted family doctor, a genius, a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Mensa member.”

The navigator on The Orville. He is a complete stereotype. When he destroys an enemy ship, he jumps up and says, “Yeah! Take that, bitch!” When they are undercover on an alien planet, he makes a spectacle of himself by dry humping a statue in public. No other character acts the way he does.
