I think the changes are positive, but potentially very dangerous to the Crown Prince personally, and to Saudi society in general.
These radical changes also come at a moment when several other events have converged to create new dangers.
First, because of new oil field technologies and environmental restrictions, the price of oil has likely been reduced to a permanently lower level. That has put great stress on the Saudi government budget, which has been used to pacify the lower classes with generous welfare payments, for the last 50 years.
Second, the Saudis are currently fighting two proxy wars against Iran - one in Yemen, and one in Syria. There is nothing that can destroy a long established monarchy as quickly as a war that goes badly wrong.
Third, I think the age of the Crown Prince - 32 - is a liability. Very few men of that age have the wisdom and the maturity that will be required to peacefully navigate Saudi Arabia through the next ten years.
