The new GOP tax overhaul would strip illegal immigrants of the ability to claim several major tax credits, saving the government $23.1 billion over the next decade, according to the bill’s authors.
For years Republicans have complained that despite a general ban on taxpayer benefits flowing to illegal immigrants, the IRS has allowed them to collect the child tax credit, the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit.
Efforts to shut down those claims have been tried in the House but have never cleared Congress.

I like what I’m hearing in this tax bill and hope it survives the Senate intact.
Finally! Billions of our tax dollars have been sent to Mexico since the Earned Income Tax Credit was manufactured to camouflage welfare to illegals. Payments are sent to nieces and nephews, grandchildren, half-brothers and sisters, and our government has no way to check exactly who is getting the money in Mexico. It could be another drug cartel scam.
Fine by be . . . and glad I don’t own any Tesla stock. The power grid needs to be more integrated in terms of geographic coverage.
There is some good and bad in the bill. Overall though it is a positive.
Federal investigators say an apartment complex in Charlotte played a major role in a $5 million tax fraud scheme. Two women, Candida Mayo Figueroa and Cathy Lee Cisneros, were arrested and charged with coordinating hundreds of bogus tax returns with fake names that flooded into a handful of mailboxes.
The IRS was tipped off after the U.S. Postal Service noticed a flood of “suspicious mailings from the U.S. Treasury Department appearing to contain Treasury checks” hitting the same mailboxes, according to court records.
Investigators tied at least 17 tax returns, totaling more than $62,000 in refunds, to a Charlotte apartment Figueroa leased. At another apartment nearby, investigators discovered 153 returns valued at $713,000 in refunds. Another address in the same apartment complex had 236 returns worth $1.1 million in refunds.
Investigators say the clustered addresses and a bank of mailboxes made for easy access to those refunds. An apartment complex manager told investigators Figueroa was seen taking mail from all three apartment mailboxes.
Down the road at another apartment complex, the tax scheme got bigger, according to investigators, who traced 398 returns to two apartments, totaling more than $1.9 million in additional child tax credits with no guarantee that the children existed or lived in the U.S.

Figueroa's attorney, Harold Cogdell, says his client is not guilty and does not have the skill set to pull off such a scam. She and Cisneros were being held on immigration detainers. Both pleaded not guilty initially, but later changed their pleas to guilty. They will be sentenced at a later date.

The IRS defended its interpretation of the tax code, which states that illegal immigrants who pay no taxes are eligible for the tax credits. Filtering out who is not eligible is the problem.

True. Better tha zero though. We’re nibbling around the edges of the costs associated with illegals. I’m waiting for the big bite....
I suppose that as some of us homeowners pay more in total taxes in forthcoming years, we can console ourselves with this tidbit.

I agree..there is some good in the bill but also a few things that could be changed. We live in California, my Mom pays 19,000 in property tax..so because of this bill she will be taxed even more? Also how much you can deduct from the mortgage is also an issue..unfortunately we live in a far left high tax state
Let them run south. They’ll come back under a different name. That is if they are allowed back.
