Or is this just fake news? Did a Russian Missile Really Hit an Israeli F-35? Did a Russian anti-aircraft missile hit one of Israel’s new F-35 stealth fighters?

Pro-Russian media are claiming that an Israeli F-35I was hit and damaged by a Russian-made S-200 surface-to-air missile during an Israeli air strike in Syria earlier this month. Israel says one of its F-35s was damaged—after colliding with a bird.

The story begins on October 16, when Israel announced that its aircraft had struck a Syrian SAM battery near Damascus that had fired two hours earlier on Israeli reconnaissance planes flying over Lebanon. The attack damaged the missile battery, and no Israeli aircraft were hit, according to Israel. Coincidentally or not, the incident happened the same day that Russia’s defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, arrived in Israel for talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Who to believe, a dead bird or Russian media? I’ll take the bird.

Ridiculous. If an S-200 had hit the F-35, it would not have been damaged. It would have been destroyed.

They should be flying F-22’s, not F-35’s.

Then again, we should have 500 F-22’s and we only have 170.

Agreed. With a 217 kg proximity fused, blast fragmentation warhead the S-200/SA-5 is very unlikely to only damage an F-35.

i am going to guess the Russians would not do this.
or even try to do this.
they have been working with Jerusalem to prevent any possible conflicts

(and I seriously doubt the Russians would be so foolish as to turn over control of their equipment to Muslims in Syria)

That's assuming that the proximity fuse worked correctly...:^)

Stealth aircraft are not radar invisible. Stealth tech is usually described as 'low observable.' The range at which an aircraft can be detected is reduced. Attacking an air defense site, flying towards the radar, will increase the chance of detection.

If this F-35I was hit by a missile, it wouldn't be the first time a stealth aircraft was successfully intercepted.

Depends on the angle of arrival, head shot vs tail shot, etc...

They're both right, in a sense -- the bird and the S-200 may as well be using the same guidance system when it comes to trying to shoot down Israeli planes.

If I was a betting man, I’d bet on the F35 vs a Russian System. This is above our pay grade and fodder for some aviation writer or blog to generate clicks. Those that are talking don’t know and those that know aren’t saying.
