When I moved to Monterey, CA in the early 80s, Leon Panetta was a republican and everyone thought he was a pretty good guy. Somewhere along the line he went over to the dark side and then sold his soul to work in the White House and run cover for the Clintons. I never understood it.

Maybe he is trying to repent.

I figured the guy wasn’t a typical Democrat hack when I saw the report suggesting that he had authorized the Osama bin Laden raid against Obama’s wishes. Supposedly Obama wasn’t even told about the raid until after it was already underway, and he was hustled into the “situation room” for those infamous photos just so they could pretend he had some involvement in it.

Doubt he is familiar with the concept. More likely, IMO, he seized this opp for a tv appearance in an effort to save his credentials (cover), be relevant and be on the right side of what has developed to be an obvious argument.

As native Californian, I resolved he was just another smooth talking pol. It seems clearer to me now that he was always a RINO and very good at working the room in an upscale R neighborhood.

I was in Monterey in 1984.

I was stationed at the Presidio, taking a year-long Russian language course for the good ole US Army. One of the most fun Army postings I ever had!

But I didn’t know anything about Panetta then. I was too busy drinking Stoli from the freezer and learning how to say Hello in Russian.
