I stopped being a government employee in 1987 with my honorable discharge.
I have worked in the private sector ever since, and not related to defense.
Did my hard time, the got as far away as I could.
I understand your point - but means testing for SS hasnt passed yet. But both parties will be on board when the money cant be printed.
Weve gone Galt and decided to quit supporting our fascist government. But not because we want money from them later.
SS is already socialized (you may have touched on this, sorry if I didnt catch it). Those paying in the most will never get their money back, even at todays payment calculations. The bottom tier gets 90% credit in the calculations and over time will get lots more than they ever paid in, subsidized by the former.
When I did the calculations for my husband and he saw he would pay in $200,000 until hes 67 -double that for his employers portion- yet only receive back less than $50k more - convincing him to go Galt was easy.
Roll all the gov’t pensions into 401k plans and save a bundle.
The military is switching to a 401k style retirement (Thrift Saving Program). I wonder how that will pan out?
Having just dealt with means-testing for college financial aid, seeing how the Earned Income Credit works on income tax forms, and knowing SS is insolvent, I can only say it is inevitable; combined with what they already do to the program (moving the goalposts to 67 years old for retirement, increasing the cap at which people pay) they will add years to the program.
