After the horrific shooting in Las Vegas, many people ask why is gun ownership so high in the U.S.? That's an honest question. Maybe you've asked that of yourself or have had it pose to you by a liberal friend as I have. There are many reasons, and I'd like to touch of a few of the less mentioned ones. And no, they have nothing to do with hunting and target shooting.

Simple answer for me is "Because we can." Still firmly planted in the Bill of Rights as far as I know. Infringement is common though.

We are founded on the idea that a government must not control the people. The people must control the government.

To that end, our founders ensured that the people would not be controlled by way of being unarmed [think Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao, and Hitler] via bill of rights and specifically 2nd amendment.

So the means the government IS using to try to control us is other than force.

Simple answer for me is "Because we can."

And also, particularly since our government hates us and would like nothing better than to crush us into submission, "Because we must."

Exactly. My wife related a conversation she had with a co-worker who loudly exclaimed "Who owns all these guns? Why do people have guns?" She said "My father, brothers, and husband all have guns, and they don't have any problems with owning or using them."

I was quite proud to hear her relate that to me. She isn't pro-gun per se, but she recognizes it is a right, and also recognizes that owning and using guns isn't the primary issue.

To paraphrase Bill Whittle's amazingly astute video "It's The Steel"...it ISN'T The Steel.

Because, in a free society, groups like ANTIFA, ISIS, KKK, and the BLM are inevitable. Worse, like staphylococcus they infect government. As a free society, we require the tools necessary to eradicate the infection.

One, in much of the country police response is very slow. A lot of us live a half mile away from our neighbor, or in towns so small that there is no police. Or we live in big cities that have the same issue. Even though their are hundreds of police cars at any time. There are also hundreds of calls. So even though there is a guy in your house. You end up waiting 30 minutes for the first car to arrive. In the mean time its him or you. And with a gun it more likely him.

The second reason is hunting. We hunt. We also take out skunks and raccoons. But our country is loaded with Turkey and deer and geese. And we eat these things.

So for these two reasons more than anything else, we buy guns. There are other reasons, recreation and such. But those are not as common.

Better question is what did my owning a gun have to do with the Vegas murders?

You helped, apparently, by contributing to the “gun culture”. Or something. Me too.

I’ve always wondered why “smart” phone and automobile ownership in the U.S. is so high. I think FREEDOM has something to do with it.

I never owned a gun.
Until Clinton.
He opened my eyes to the truth about liberals.

Simple answer for me is, “Because if a person comes to my door and threatens me, I will shoot that person...at least in the leg.”

For me, shooting guns is a recreational relaxation, sometimes called a hobby. The fact this right is enshrined in the Constitution is a real plus.

I’m thankful to God to live in a country where owning and feeding guns is authorized by law.

Extending “because we can”, any time legislators hint at further restricting access, we demonstrate “because we can” in droves by buying more. Guns being extremely durable, the cumulative numbers just keep increasing. Guns being kinda expensive, most people don’t have a lot of them - so when they do buy another, the percent increase owned is substantial.

Hmmm. Anyone have any firarms with wear ratings on them like tires? AA 600 wear rating. Warranty for 50,000 rounds? Mountain/snowflake stamped on the barrel? You know for use in winter weather.

“Why is gun ownership so high in the US?”

Because of all those Cowboy and Indian Movies during and after WW2 ?

Seems reasonable to me.....

Why is gun ownership so high in the US?

The pinhead liberals want a single, simple answer, but I don't think the reason cannot be boiled down that easily. My personal reason for owning a gun came down to a couple of things:

As I grew older, I realized that I could no longer rely on hand to hand combat, as I would probably be facing at least a knife and probably a gun and I needed something with a "stand off" distance capability.

Also, since 0bama and the left were determined to recruit future dem voters by throwing open the borders, even "safe" neighborhoods were no longer safe.

Because we know better than to assume that the magical government fairy in the form of law enforcement will always be there to keep us safe. Americans have always believed in taking care of themselves, despite what the Democrat/Republican Uniparty thinks.

I have a book that said that military surplus weapons double in value every 10 years. That was before klinton.
