A little over a century ago, the ancestors of modern Austrians were at the vanguard of religious liberty in Europe, giving their small Muslim community the same rights as Christians or Jews.
Today, the much larger and rapidly growing Muslim population of Austria sees their country again setting the tone in Europe but this time in a far more ominous direction.
In Sundays election, well over half the countrys voters chose parties that defined themselves by their hard-line stances on immigration, integration and multiculturalism.
The third-place finisher, the Freedom Party, campaigned on the proposition that Islam is incompatible with Austrian values and an existential threat to Europe.
The leader of the vote-topping Peoples Party and Austrias likely next chancellor, 31-year-old Sebastian Kurz, doesnt go that far. But hes mimicked much of the Freedom Partys rhetoric, lashing out at Muslim kindergartens, calling for rescued migrants to be sent back to Africa and promising sharply reduced benefits for newcomers.

I’m not sure why any Mulsims would be frightened by a “hard-right” turn by a government; they embrace the strictest religion in the world (from a civilized Western standpoint).

I suppose the Freedom Party is technically the “third place party”.
But it went from 40 seats to 51 seats, just 1 seat short of the SPO (socialist party) that stayed at 52 seats.
It gets harder and harder to get your way by falsely accuse someone of being a Nazi the closer you get to people who still remember what the Nazis actually were and spent their lives being falsely accused of being Nazis.

The WaPo folks, not having the benefit of real educations (being journalists) evidently have not learned the simple fact of who the Muslims backed in WWII.
