Shattuck: John Kelly gives eloquent address
The Boston Herald ^ | 10-20-17 | Tom Shattuck

Chief of staff John Kelly took to the podium in the White House press briefing room yesterday just after 3 p.m. What ensued was the most stunning 12 minutes in that room in long memory.

He educated. He excoriated. He earned the respect of America yet again.

He was there to set the record straight about President Trump’s condolence phone call to the widow of Army Sgt. La David Johnson, who died in a terrorist attack in Niger on Oct. 4.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, a Florida Democrat, listened in on the call and loudly claimed that Trump had insulted the mourning family by saying Johnson “knew what he signed up for.”

The beltway media ran with the story and a firestorm erupted. Wilson has gladly been soaking up the attention her wild claims about a grieving family have garnered.

Afterward, Fox News White House correspondent Kevin Corke tweeted, “I’ve covered 3 administrations as a WH Correspondent. Never seen anything like today’s briefing. Riveting, powerful and sadly necessary.”

Corke later told me that Kelly “proved that the ultimate trump card is the unvarnished, painful reflection of a parent who has lost a child at war.”

As it should be.

Reminded me of the Band of Brothers speech from Henry V. Finally, somebody called a member of the negro caucus a scumbag that they all are.

...”Afterward, Fox News White House correspondent Kevin Corke tweeted, “I’ve covered 3 administrations as a WH Correspondent. Never seen anything like today’s briefing. Riveting, powerful and sadly necessary.””...

I was traveling in my car and heard the whole speech. Blinded by my tears, I actually almost forgot to make my familiar turn to home. I could not really call what I hear a “speech.” It was a heart to heart talk with this nation about how far we have lost our way and how dangerous is the path we are on. His thoughts, words, knowledge and experience, were powerfully expressed, and, I hope, pivotal, for those who heard what he had to say. I would guess that he comforted so many who just cannot believe what is going on in America right now regarding the state of our institutions, which form much of our morality, our discipline, knowledge and commitment to the future. May God bless General Kelly, his family and our nation.

The most sad part of this is that a family lost their loved one, who by all accounts was a good man worthy if the respect shown him by General Kelly.

The most annoying part is that in 2018 the people of Florida's 24th district will once again elect her to congress. She has a nice safe rotten borough district. In 2016 she ran unopposed.

That’s the Herald, not the Globe. The Herald is one of the few papers that ever shows a modicum of reason and sanity. The other is the NY Post.

Thanks for sharing your experience of hearing General Kelly’s conversation (I won’t say speech) with America. In my 22 years in the Marine Corps I had the privilege of knowing many such leaders as General Kelly. I have tried to emulate them over my own lifetime and many times wondered if I measured up.

I remember one time being a member of 3/3 in Hawaii on the Marine Corps birthday when our Regimental commander Col Ron Christmas took the whole regiment out on a run. A regiment is a whole lot of men. A little background on Col (retired General) Christmas, he was awarded the Navy Cross (America’s second highest medal) for his actions in Hue, Vietnam 1968. He took a grenade that messed up his left side at Hue with a highly visible scar that runs down his face. He was out there leading us on this run in his PT shorts and his shriveled up left leg that looked like a pipe cleaner. It must have put him in a lot of pain to run I would think but you would have never known it that day.

I’ve posted this before, but General Kelly gave a eulogy a few days after his own son died for two Marines who had died defending their fellow Marines against a truck bomber. You have to read it to know the character of men and women we currently have in the military:

I’m with General Kelly. Is there no shame left? Is there no respect for any institution that we have? Can there not be one sacred thing left in America?

It would not be out of the question that someday, in about 7+ years, we might have A Gen. Kelley as POTUS.
