2 former presidents — from both parties — blast the state of American politics in unprecedented day

The two most recent presidents on Thursday blasted the state of US politics in events that were separated by less than 20 miles.

First, it was former President George W. Bush. The most recent former Republican president lambasted a political culture that caused "bigotry" to seem "emboldened." The public comments were Bush's most pointed since President Donald Trump took office in January.

"In recent decades, public confidence in our institutions has declined," the 43rd president said at an event in New York hosted by his namesake institute. "Our governing class has often been paralyzed in the face of obvious and pressing needs. The American dream of upward mobility seems out of reach for some who feel left behind in a changing economy. Discontent deepened and sharpened partisan conflicts. Bigotry seems emboldened. Our politics seems more vulnerable to conspiracy theories and outright fabrication."

The forum was branded as being "focused on freedom, free markets, and security." It featured speakers such as former first lady Laura Bush, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley. And Bush provided a substantial condemnation of the state of US politics.

Yes, he was.

As LS said, (paraphrase) he made us feel good for awhile.

As for the anti Trump slam, speech, he show his true colors. He is an idiot and a traitor to the GOP.

Partner, Blacks are most racists than anything we have ever seen. I do not know why since most white folks have bent over backwards to help these folks as much as we can on everything from everyday matters to helping any blacks that are on government programs.

“Yes. Very, very sad what he became. After 9/11 I thought he had great potential.”

I have no idea if W ever believed in the founding principle of limited government, but after 9/11, he no longer had a political need to appeal to conservatives on that basis.

After 9/11, the “keeping us safe” meme allowed W to retain the conservative base even while ignoring the true long term conservative agenda of restoring limits on government through enforcement of the constitution.

“Yes. Very, very sad what he became.”

He never changed. A lot of people are simply seeing past his phony facade for the first time. In California some of us got to see what he’s really like long before he became President.

In 1994 during the campaign to pass Prop 187, then Texas Governor GW Bush flew out here and sided with Mexico’s massive illegal alien population against grassroots California voters working hard to stem the invasion. That told me all I ever needed to know about Bush junior.
