... Jefferson County, Texas, is among the low-lying coastal areas of America that could lose the most as the ice caps melt and the seas warm and rise. At the same time, it is more economically dependent on the petroleum industry and its emissions-spewing refineries than any other place in the U.S. Residents seemed to choose between the two last November, abandoning a four-decade-old pattern of voting Democratic in presidential elections to support Donald Trump.
Then came Hurricane Harvey. Now some conservatives here are newly confronting some of the most polarizing questions in American political discourse: What role do humans play in global warming and the worsening of storms like Harvey? And what should they expect their leaders including the climate-skeptic president they helped elect to do about the problem now?
Answers are hard to come by in a place where refineries stand like cityscapes. Nearly 5,000 people work in the petroleum industry. Some have described the chemical stink in the air as the smell of money it means paychecks, paid mortgages and meals.
Christopher, like most people in Jefferson County, believed that global warming was real before the storm hit. Post-Harvey, surrounded by debris stretching for block after block, he thinks the presidents outright rejection of the scientific consensus is no longer good enough.
But how do you help the climate without hurting those who depend on climate-polluting industries?
Its a Catch-22 kind of thing, he said. Do you want to build your economy, or do you want to save the world?

Count me in if you want to save the world. Right now I am rescuing virgins from dragons - hard work- can’t find dragons OR virgins.
What an ass.
I like that you post that photo in connect with these sorts of reports.
Excellent idea.
It’s Autumn and in a couple month it will be winter.
There..I confronted climate change.
I remember when people asked questions, now they are characterized as ‘confronting’ questions.
Congrats to the Mercury News for finding the STOOOOOOPIDEST guy in Texas.
“What role do humans play in global warming and the worsening of storms like Harvey? “
Other than stalling over SE TX for 5 days what makes Harvey any worse than a typical Hurricane?
Sacrifice a couple trillion dollars in a volcano and gaia MAY be appeased.
But if Hitlery had been elected Mother Earth wouldnt have revolted in the first place. Tsk tsk.

Really?!? No conservative would ask this idiotic leftard question. True conservatives would only ask the most relevant question pertaining to glowbull warming which is...”how stupid are liberals to believe this garbage?”

Or not.
All events have a 50/50 probability: either something happens or it doesn’t.
And some neighborhoods flooded as dam water was deliberately released.
NASA recently announced that the seas were getting lower, not higher. Your premise is a lie, Claire.
They elected Trump in part because he does not suffer fools or believe in fairy tales...
Ask Americans if they’re willing to pay $10 for a gallon of gas to “confront climate change.”
You ever notice that if the topic is climate change, the very first sentence will state it with the unblinking certainty of a universal truth?

Looking for the “LIKE” icon.
As a result of flooding caused by a stalled hurricane.
Christopher, like most people in Jefferson County,
BS
“But how do you help the climate without hurting those who depend on climate-polluting industries?”
By increasing the market for climate-helping industries, which gives them new jobs to transition to.
Hence my increasing rhetoric: if you claim concern about climate change, but travel (direct or by proxy) by gasoline-powered vehicle, you’re a hypocrite and easily dismissed.
Solar power isn’t cheap, but it’s affordable if you care enough.
Electric cars (with good range) aren’t cheap, but affordable if you care enough.
Pollution-free industries don’t exist, but you can fund (as a customer) those that either pollute less or have a future more likely to reduce pollution substantially.
Upshot is: if YOU don’t actually start routing YOUR money to encourage the world you want, it ain’t gonna happen. Put up or shut up.
It’s also true that if the topic is climate change, every paragraph will contain pretty much pure BS. The only ones writing about it at all are those who want to believe its OUR fault. Those of us who know that the climate has always and will always change don’t waste our time stating the obvious.
